Colleagues, if you see errors below, or have other useful data to add, please post to the List, or to me [OFFLINE]. Many thanks, Phil _HANZI Character: ýó® _PINYIN Name: Bailiupi; Baiyangliupi (ýèó® (ýÊó®)); _LATIN Name: Salicis albae Cx; also S. daphnoides, S. pentandra _ENGLISH Name: White Willow Cx _NATURE: Bitter; Cold; non-toxic; fresh bark is very bitter & astringent; _HAS: willow has salicin; salicortin, picein, fragilin, tremulacin & triandrin, salicylic acid esters, tannins (astringent), tannic acid, catechins, flavonoids; tannins, flavonoids, phenolic glycosides; glycosides are excreted in urine as salicylic acid, salicyl alcohol, & related compounds; this makes Tea useful for UTI (urethra & BL irritation); willow phenolic glycosides all have similar physiol & pharmacol effects; they are natural source of salicylates (water soluble aspirin-like compounds); they convert to active principle salicylic acid in SI-LI & LV; willow bark therapeutic actions occur more slowly but continue for a longer time than if salicylate itself were given bc of time needed for conversion; salicylic acid is precursor of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid); reduces prostaglandins (which mediate aches, pain, & inflammation); Salicin acts like quinine & is better for fevers; it decomposes into salicylic acid in body; half-life of salicin in plasma is circa 2.5h; salicin & salicortin inhibit cyclooxygenase; irreversible inhibition of thrombocytes is unlikely; no increased interaction w anticoagulants is likely, but see CAUTIONS; _ACTIONS: (1) Antipyretic, Antifebrile; Clear Heat; Disperse Wind Damp; Clear Damp Heat; Antiicterus; Antiinflammatory; Antirheumatic; Release Binds; Ease Pain; Aid Mahuang to promote thermogenesis; Antiperiodic (prevents regular recurrence of disease symptoms, as in malaria); (2) Astringent**; Haemostat in mild /passive bleeding (but unreliable in severe bleeding); Prevent stroke & blood clots; expectorant, Tonic; (3) Digestive; Aid digestion; less damaging to ST-SI- LI than aspirin; vermifuge; (4) Diuretic; Antihydrotic, Antiseptic**, Reduce Swelling; restrain sexual passion & misuse; restrain sexual passion from any functional cause; tonic & sedative to many conditions after sexual intemperance; (5) Tonic; leaf infusion is sedative~aid sleep; liquid extract used in a mixture w other sedatives; may be taken in small doses as bitter tonic before meals, to hasten convalescence from acute disease; Stimulant; Tonic; tonic & astringent properties useful in convalescence; (6) Clear Heat; Disperse Wind Damp; Clear Damp Heat; Antiseptic**; Astringent**; _DOSE: use like aspirin: mild on ST (in contrast to aspirin) maybe bc most salicylic acid in white willow is present in chemical forms that are converted to salicylic acid only after absorption into body; Products should be standardized to content of salicin w doses of 60-120 mg salicin/d; 120-240mg of salicin/d in severe pain but see CAUTIONS; Up to 30g/d can be consumed in Tea if needed, but take no more than is needed; Oral: As Dec: decoct 1 teaspoon of bark slowly in 1½ pints of water, covered, for 30 minutes; bark & leaf used; 1-2g/cup of water as Dec/Tea by boiling for 10 minutes; _USES: (1) fevers & chills, feverish illnesses; fever rheumatic; fever like malaria; malaria & ague; fever~recurrent/protracted w chills & sweating; pain & fever; LV~hepatitis; icterus; sweat~menopausal; Dec of bark & leaves to break a fever (leaf Dec in minor feverish illnesses & colic); (2) Influenza, Epistaxis; stroke, blood clots; hayfever; Phlegm, bronchorrhoea & respiratory catarrh; Tea can be taken for bleeding~internal; (3) dyspepsia dt digestive organs debility; heartburn & ST disorders; ST catarrh; ST Phlegm; gum swelling; diarrhoea/dysentery (esp dt Damp & Heat in ST-SI-LI tract); diarrhoea~catarrhal; diarrhoea~chronic; diarrhoea/dysentery~chronic; gargle w Dec for inflamed gums & tonsils; ST-SI-LI worms; (4) urogenital irritation; UTI/BL~cystitis; prostatitis; BPH~acute; prostate enlarged~acute; Lin Syndrome (urinary obstruction); menstrual irregularities; dysmenorrhoea; menstrual cramps; leucorrhoea; emission~night; leucorrhoea (was used for gonorrhoea); sexual intemperance (male / female); sexual irritability w lascivious dreams; sexual erethrism; libidinous thoughts; extreme sexual excitability w uncontrollable desire; libidinous/ lascivious thoughts /dreams~day / night; ending in masturbation/emission/ spermatorrhoea; sexual perversion~extreme; satyriasis; erotomania; & nymphomania; ovaritis; orchitis & other sexual disorders resulting from excess & abuse; (5) convalescence from acute diseases; (6) wound sepsis/wounds~infected; ulcerations/ eczema; boil Hb in twice its volume of water in a covered pot for >30 minutes & add some borax / boric acid (1 tablespoon /500ml water); use Tea as Topical as needed; Dec/Tea /solution of Bailiupi mixed w borax is deodorizing & Antiseptic Topical wash for skin sores, burns & wounds; Topically: Dec to remove warts; Wind Swelling; eczema; impetigo; malignant boils; furuncles; erysipelas; use poultice / strong wash of fresh / dried herb; calluses; corns; tumours; cancers; tooth decay; swelling; goitre; inflammation of connective tissue & membranes; to help weight loss in obesity; mucosal damage /catarrhal discharges; Dec of ash of burned willow stems as Topical wash to treat sore eyes; Topical to burn off warts; _COMMENTS: Traditional formulas: Alfalfa & Yucca combination; White Willow combination; White Willow & Valerian combination; _CAUTION: Usually safe at low (normal) doses; although Bailiupi is easier on ST than aspirin, prolonged use/high doses can irritate ST & cause bleeding ulcer, nausea & tinnitus; Adverse reactions are uncommon but most risks of aspirin use apply, including ST-SI-LI bleeding, nausea, & emesis, tinnitus & KI damage; No drug interactions reported but there are theoretical interactions w Anticoagulants / Antiplatelet aggregation drugs dt variable salicylate content: Theoretically, Bailiupi may increase risk of bleeding & ST-SI-LI mucosal damage; may interact adversely w alcohol & " blood thinners, " AVOID w aspirin / NSAIDs (i.e. naproxen & ibuprofen, methotrexate, metoclopramide, phenytoin, probenecid, spironolactone, & valproate) bc Bailiupi may have additive effect w them & should therefore not be used concurrently; Combining Bailiupi & these drugs may increase chance of side effects, like ST bleeding; AVOID in children w fever due to risk of Reye’s syndrome; AVOID in children <16 years of age; CAUTION/CI in patients w known allergy / intolerance to aspirin / NSAIDs, bleeding disorders, ulcers, severe KI disease, severe LV disease, / diabetes; CAUTION in interpreting test results that are sensitive to salicylates; AVOID in tinnitus; CAUTION in pregnancy/lactation; People w pre- existing medical conditions should consult doctor, esp if they are taking prescription / OTC drugs/supplements; people w ST irritation, bleeding disorders, ulcers, IBS, LV/KI disease, diabetes should consult doctor before taking Best regards, Tel: (H): +353-(0) or (M): +353-(0) Ireland.
