I would say that Actea racemosa does it in an analogous fashion to sheng ma. I would say that Actea rubra does it though not as well, being more nourishing and less moving. It is interesting to note that overdose of Actea racemosa is said to cause frontal headaches. I have never seen this when using decoctions of any of the species, neither Chinese nor Western, but I have seen it when using A. racemosa as a tincture. This leads me to believe that this medicinal acts quite strongly to lift yang qi as a tincture, dare I say more strongly than sheng ma. I have not used any of the sheng ma species as a tincture, it would an interesting test to see how such a preparation would feel.
