I'm not on a crusade against Amazon or " corporate evils. " Sometimes one doesn't have any money and needs to buy their books as cheaply as possible. No big deal. But Amazon has a different system than book distributors have always had in the past, because they don't actually need to buy and stock the product. They have no investment in it so they can sell it less expensively. This hurts small publishers, who have a very small margin to begin with- nearly 80% of small publishing companies have gone under since Amazon. I'm not trying to get people to not buy books from Amazon, I just think people should be aware that their Amazon purchases do affect real people and this limits the ability of writers to earn a living by transmitting Chinese medicine. I'm not interested in taking up space on an herbal forum to talk about the book industry. But proof is not lacking in this debate. I work for a publisher; trust me, it is a real issue. Guest guest
I think painting Amazon as a great corporate evil is appealing in some ways, but I would like to know what proof you have. Not all books are sold at a discount. For example, the latest edition of Bensky et al's Materia Medica is being sold at its list price >>>>>> Yes but to do that the publisher must sell the book at a short discount and then many bookstores will not carry the book. Eric is 100% correct in saying Amazon is responsible for many publishers, not just book sellers, going out of business.
