I know that in Taiwan some medical universities require that faculty members produce consistent SCI publications in order to advance to the higher levels of professorship. Because most SCI journals won't publish articles on pure East Asian medical theory or scholarship, many doctors elect to preform laboratory studies on animals because it is the easiest way of producing publications that advance their career towards more stable, higher-paid positions in an institutional setting. The lack of recognition for pure CM publications is one of the great complaints about the system, as I understand it. However, I've never really looked into it completely, and there may be journals (possibly in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean?) that have SCI status and print pure CM articles. By the way, awhile back Todd was asking list members to share advice that would inspire students to excel in and enjoy the field of CM. It's worth pointing out that Gabriel Fuentes is a model of a student who got good advice and listened to it. Following his experiences studying with teachers such as Bob Damone and Bob Flaws, he was inspired to pack his bags and take the plunge into Asian society to study Chinese after graduation. In the most amazing display of good sense, good motivations, and good luck that I have seen, Gabriel was able to miraculously get himself into Spanish translation gigs at China Medical University, the oldest TCM university in Taiwan, within a few months of getting off the plane. Now the guy is getting constantly involved in a variety of special projects put on by the university, and he is getting all manners of connections with doctors in the hospital to study. So I'd just like to say " way to go! " to Gabe and nominate him as a poster child to inspire students who really want to excel and take their studies into limitless new arenas.
