Guest guest
I have a patient who is a speech pathologist, specializing in treating autism. She asked whether acupuncture was effective to treat autistic children. I told her I would do some research. I found some interesting experimental research on tongue acupuncture done by Virginia Wong in Hong Kong (www.elc.org.uk/papers/2003Wong.doc). But apart from that I did not find much. Does anybody have any experience with treating autism or any guidance on where I might find more info? The way I see it, from a TCM perspective I would be treating the " 5 slows " or " 5 delays " Thanks in advance, Joe Curcio <http://www.acupoint.net> Joseph Curcio Licensed Acupuncturist Stillpoint Acupuncture and Herbs <http://maps./py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap & addr=333+Richmond+St. & csz=El+Segu ndo%2C+CA+90245 & country=us> 333 Richmond St. El Segundo, CA 90245 <jc jc <http://www.acupoint.net> www.acupoint.net tel: fax: (310) 335-0073 (310) 335-0400 <https://www.plaxo.com/add_me?u=42949777725 & v0=209541 & k0=1864716747> Add me to your address book... <http://www.plaxo.com/signature> Want a signature like this? The way I see it, from a TCM perspective I would be treating the " 5 slows " or " 5 delays " Thanks in advance, Joe Curcio Hey Joe, I've had one patient for probably 8 years now who is autistic. The little guy started up with herbs when he was probably 5 or so. His pattern looked like damp heat more than anything. So we started working on that, as it turns out, " auties " as their moms sometimes call them have a common issue with diarrhea. Soon as we dried him up inside, the diarrhea went away and he became much more responsive to the outside world. He also had a lot of tics, and he liked to rub his eyes a lot. The liver/wind connection couldn't be ignored either. Keeping in line with the damp issue, I gave him Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang. Other formulas included Er Chen Tang and Ge Gen Huang Lian Huang Qin tang. All modified with Shi Chang Pu and Yuan Zhi, if memory serves. He still has problems. When he's responsive, he still has a learning disability. Not sure how much the two are related, though. End result is, we can bring him out for periods of time, we can address the tics and eye rubbing, and we can clear some heat from the heart that gives rise to a maniacal laughter at night that really disturbs his mom. But I haven't cured him. I just make life a little bit easier for he and his family. -- Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
Guest guest
I heard Michael Smith (of NADA) lecture a couple of years ago, and he was having success treating autistic kids using the NADA protocol with gold beads instead of needles. Also adding a point of the back of the ear " behind shen men. " From what I remember he said you could also use magnets, using the south pole of the magnet to tonify. He said TCM-wise the focus was on treating the Lung organ - and he used the same treatment for hyperactivity, interestingly. He treated 3 times in 2 weeks. You can get the gold " beads " he used from Health Point Products, Lou Amadeo, 516-328-6671, and if you tell him you want what Michael Smith uses, he'll know what you're looking for. They're about $5.00 for 100. Good luck. Elijah , Al Stone <al@g...> wrote: > > Does anybody have any experience with treating autism or any guidance on > where I might find more info? Guest guest
How was he defining success?
