Guest guest
Hi All Can someone please tell me how to convert a formula that is written in percentage to grams? For example if an author lists Si Jun Zi Tang as: Ren Shen 30%, Bai Zhu 30%, Fu Ling 30%, and Zhi Gan Cao 10%, how do I do the math so that I can convert it to read Ren Shen 9g,Bai Zhu9g, Fu Ling 9g, and Zhi Gan Cao 3g? That is a fairly easy example. I get confused when something reads like for example the same above herbs but 20%,16%, 60%,and 4%. I understand that in 100g 30% is 30g. What I want to do is to take a formula from the " Notes from South Mountain " or " Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines " books which are written in percentages and convert those percentages into grams. I know how to do the math to take a formula in grams and convert it to percentage, but can't seem to figure out the math to go from percentage to grams. Thank you Denise

It seems like you answered your own question above, but you've missed it. Really, all you need to know is how many total grams the formula is, then when you see the percentages listed, even if they are not nice round numbers, just multiply the total grams by each percentage to get the gram equivalent for that medicinal. I do not have the book you mention. Does it not have the total grams for the formula? If not, then check another formulary. Brian C. Guest guest
You can look at this two ways. An easy case would be that if you feel gan cao should be 3 grams in the formula and it is 6 percent of the total then divide every other herb's percentage by 2 to get their gram weight. In this case you have to make a determination of at least one herb's weight. In the other way you would determine the total weight of all the herbs in the finished formula and do the math in the same way. A 90 gram formula would require 90 per cent of each percentage. A 110 gram formula would require a 1.1 multiplication. Both cases require a judgement before you start. I think that should do it. doug , " mountainwarp " <twoocean39 wrote: > > Hi All > Can someone please tell me how to convert a formula that is written in > percentage to grams?
