Guest guest
OK, I hope this will work out for everybody. What I suggest that we take up Bob Felt's offer and suggest terms for a standard. Now there are issues of whether a standard should be made but let's leave that aside for now. I also highly suggest that in CHA debates and elsewhere we leave aside, as a matter of discipline and professionalism, issues of motives, economics, academics and history. I would suggest that person's not defend or attack other term choices except in the most general manner at this point. I know we will see a very small number of words for which we on this list would disagree and lets see what each other can live with. I have my own ideas about these discussions but I think we can all agree that a cooperative debate would best serve the English speaking and international communities. So please tread respectfully and if you have any doubts wait for a few days or hours or minutes before firing off responses. doug , Mark Sherwood <savesherwoodforest wrote: > > I've read this list for a few years. I wish you the very best for your March term meeting. My personal opinion remains the same as in my previous letter to you. Standardization is a natural process, it occurs when a proposed standard becomes so useful that it is widely adopted. For the People's Republic of China to lead this process, it should set the Chinese language standard and make those who propose English terminologies subject them to the " test of time. " 1. The appropriate P.R.C. authority should publish a Chinese language list of Chinese medical terms and their definitions, such as your text " Chinese Terms in Traditional and Pharmacy. " 2. Everyone who proposes a terminology should be invited to submit their list of English equivalents for those terms. 3. Everyone who proposes a terminology should agree in writing that their terminology is available for use by anyone without fee, royalty, or prior permission of any publisher or individual. 4. The appropriate Chinese authority should make all the proposed terminologies available to anyone through the World Wide Web and other publications. In two or three years it will be very clear which terminology will be successful. There are several advantages to this approach. First, it establishes the Chinese language, and therefore Chinese expertise, as the basis of the standard. Second, it is fair and honors the traditions of academic peer review and excellence. Third, it provides P.M.P.H. and all Chinese publishers and societies the greatest guarantee that English language readers will accept their works. ********** This letter was signed by me as the publisher of Paradigm Publications. Guest guest
I agree with sherwood, censoring is not the best solution ...I live in china and censorship is not a pretty thing. According to the news here everything really is rosey in china....and america is full of very very bad men. Deisen wrote: I also highly suggest that in CHA debates and elsewhere we leave aside, as a matter of discipline and professionalism, issues of motives, economics, academics and history. Schwartz writes: how can you have a thorough debate unless you consider all elements, including the opponents motives, economics , etc....how can you carry on a debate if you cannot discuss history and academics ? Deisen: I would suggest that person's not defend or attack other term choices except in the most general manner at this point. Schwartz: We are discussing terms...so we do need to compare and contrast...perhaps we could share the facts as we perceive them...and save the personal attacks for either a chatroom or direct email between combatants (off list) A year ago I had doubts as to whether I really wanted to participate in the translating game especially if the only choice that was available was the Wiseguy...I mean Wiseman...sorry little slip. I grew up around libraries and books and have a love/fondness of words (not to mention a fondness for free choice of said words). It seemed limiting to me when I looked at the BOBx2 publishing house websites and saw variations of ¡°Wiseman's words required here....¡° Currently I dont hold this opinion to the same extant.....However when I see the relentless bickering of recent posts, I still wonder if I really want to partake in this profession. For the love of Sandy Claws would you guys get back to what you do best...TRANSrATING...focus power...., pubrish articles, make books! If I had my pick I would prefer bensky's press for my future endeavors, however I wouldn't go burning any bridges (as I am still a small fish indeed). Another small point could we please allow Bobs and Wiseman to speak directly for themselves rather then taking up their causes....bobs and wiseman (and Dan) are all wellspoken individuals and dont really need our assistance do they? Final thought/reminder: please erase all non-relavant portions of other senders emails when you post...this will shorten size and time required to read through the posts Schwartz Mail Bring photos to life!
