Guest guest
Hello everyone! I have a patient who has collagenous colitis. I have been doing some research and have found that it is pretty rare. Her body deposits collagen into her intestines and then she cannot absorb water thru the collagen. She has cold diarrhea with food particles 10 to 15 times a day and has urgent diarrhea thru the nite with occasional fecal incontinence. The rest of the picture is a 52 yof presenting with Sp Qi xu with blood xu and phlegm. (She has severe osteo arthritis. ) Her pulse is slippery and her tongue is pale, trembling and has a thin white coat. She has chronic allergies and bruises really easily!!! If anyone has any info on the colitis I would really appreciate some insights! Thank you
Guest guest
I'd ignore the word " collitis " and treat the Spleen Qi (or I perhaps Spleen Yang) deficiency as she's presenting with. You've pretty well described a Shen Ling Bai Zhu San presentation or Li Zhong Wan if it ends up being a Yang deficiency. That's where I'd start. The colitis can present in a number of ways. A more complete description of her pathology that could work would be something like " colitis due to Spleen Qi deficiency " or " colitis due to damp heat " or " colitis due to Spleen Yang deficiency " . In each case, its the second half of the statement that guides the treatment, not the first. If you want to add some herbs that are said to remove collagen from her intestines, that would be okay too. I just did a pubmed search. The only herb I can find that has an inhibitory effect on collagen is Dan Shen. While its cool temperature isn't the first choice I would make for this patient, it may not be a problem if the general temperature of the rest of the formula is warm enough.
