Kim,

I went to CAI's site and there was not mention nor indication that the herbs

they sell are Tong Ren Tang brand. How come?

Hi -

I received a notification from them by mail just last week announcing that

they now carry Beijing Tong Ren Tang patent formulas; I assume they have yet to

update the website. Take care -

Dear Yehuda -

I received a flyer from CAI via snail-mail last week stating that they are now

distributing about 30-40 TRT formulas and the TRT logo was prominently

displayed. Perhaps Ms. Chang can further enlighten everyone on this subject. I

had read recently that TRT were greatly expanding their production at a large

new facility in HK and assumed this might be connected. I'm no great fan of CAI

as they have fouled up some recent herb orders of mine, but just wanted you to

know that they may be an option. I'm not planning on ordering any of these

products myself because I have little experience with TRT, but I would

appreciate any feedback on this if you follow up on it. Thanks -

Tong Ren Tang has been *the* most reputable brand to many Chinese patients. They

have been around for generations. Some of my patients won't take any CM " patent "

formula made in PRC, other than the ones from Tong Ren Tang.

Exactly. Just to add, from what my prof. Zhang Ji says, theirs are considered

by practitioners in PRC as simply the best formulation and highest quality

patents available.

But the UK branch of Tong Ren Tang has been fined for selling herbal

creams with 5 types of corticosteoroids in it:

" Beijing Tong Ren Tang (UK) Ltd, in Shaftesbury Avenue, London, sold

an undercover Which? researcher a & #65533;10 pot of 'herbal' cream for

treating eczema.

But tests showed the ointment was laced with a cocktail of five

corticosteroids. Possible side effects at high doses include bruising

or thinning of the skin, and, once absorbed, steroids can even make

you more vulnerable to infections. It's illegal to sell these

particular steroids without a prescription. "

Does anyone on the list know how Tong Ren Tang produces their

products? I have heard that the latest trend in China is to first use

alcohol or even benzene to make a first extraction. This is before the

herbs are cooked in water and concentrated. Because this would allow

for higher potency of the end-product. The end-product is thus very

different from a traditional decoction or even granule extract. Can

anyone confirm this?

If what they sold in that London shop is indeed manufactured by Tong Ren Tang,

that'd ruin their 300 year reputation.

I'd write to them for an explanation.

TRT is a very old, traditional herbal company in

Beijing, China. If I need to buy some traditional

treated, made, and patents I will go for this brand;

like: wu ji bai feng wan, niu huang qing xin wan¡K,

tian wan bu xin dan (big herbal ball.., sealed with

the wax).

But for the high standard of GMP or ratio 5: 1, I will

get form the manufacture of Taiwan.

My two cents

I completely agree. Tong Ren Tang's specialty products are the big

traditional pills, especially ones like an gong niu huang wan.

Their common tea pills are pretty standard, they're good but not

really distinctly better than plum flower or min shan. Tong Ren

Tang does have authentic wild ginseng, with digital photos and lot

numbers that guarantee that the root hasn't been switched, etc. For

someone who is not concerned about price and wants to get authentic

products like niu huang, wild ginseng, high-end cordyceps, etc, the

Beijing Tong Ren Tang stores in Asia do have high-end and authentic

products. Very expensive, of course.

Interestingly, we got some raw formulas filled at a tong ren tang in

Beijing and the quality of the common herbs was pretty poor (this

was in the oldest shop, around since the time when they made

formulas for the Qing emperors). By contrast, the Tong Ren Tang

branch in Taipei has some really premium stuff, and even a ginseng

expert upstairs who really knows his art. Very overpriced, in both

Hong Kong and Taipei, except for a few small products. The tea

pills and other extracts sold at Tong Ren Tang shops in Mainland

China are pretty reasonably priced, but the various grades of

ginseng and velvet antler (though they offer a spectacular

selection) are rather expensive by market standards.

Some people might be squeemish about Tong Ren Tang because they are

also famous for their Hu Gu Mu Gua Jiu (reputed to contain real

tiger bone). Those disinclined towards hardcore animal products

might also have a hard time looking at the deer fetus in the window

of the Hong Kong branch. In mainland China, TRT also appears to be

their own drug manufacturer, at least, they have their own line of

Western drugs in addition to CM. No personal judgement about any of

this, just painting a picture of the scope of what Tong Ren Tang is

all about.

For common clinical use, the Taiwanese granules are overall a much

more potent, versatile, and affordable solution.

Eric,

What are the Taiwanese granules you refer to? How do they compare to granules

available in the US?

They are one and the same. The granules we use in the US are mostly

made in Taiwan. They are the identical product that is used in

Taiwanese hospitals and clinics. Taiwan's largest producers are Shun

Tian Tang (Sun Ten/Brion) and Gang Xiang Lan (KP/KPC), along with

slightly smaller producers like Sheng Chang (Qualiherb), Ke Da, and

Zhuang Song Rong.

Is KP/KPC bigger than Sheng Chang in herbal production or as a company whole ie

with their pharmaceutical division?

They are one and the same. The granules we use in the US are mostly

made in Taiwan. They are the identical product that is used in

Taiwanese hospitals and clinics. Taiwan's largest producers are Shun

Tian Tang (Sun Ten/Brion) and Gang Xiang Lan (KP/KPC), along with

slightly smaller producers like Sheng Chang (Qualiherb), Ke Da, and

Zhuang Song Rong.

Ke Da, also known as KO DA, is distributed by PhytoComm in Europe.

Good stuff, my favorite! Coating with rice. We compared the aroma from

several granules once with a group of people, koda came out best. (maybe

because of the rice coating?)

(no commercial interests)

I'm not sure, I've only been to one of their factories (KP), haven't

compared their size directly, nor have I ever seen stats on the volume

that they produce. But people always say that KP and Sun Ten are the

two biggest, and their products are by far the most prominent in

pharmacies and granule outlet shops. But I don't know how the actual

production volume compares between KP and Sheng Chang.
