Guest guest
In CHA postings, I am wondering why pinyin words often have numbers mixed in with them. Is there some download or formatting trick that will stop this? For example, in Thomas' last post, there was the number 4 after each of the two pinyin words he wrote. I am assuming that it is some sort of accent mark that my computer isn't reading. Other members of the group have mentioned this glitch as well. - Bill Schoenbart ................................... Guest guest
The numbers are the tones (Chinese) 1-4 , remember the same pin yin term could be a number of different characters On Behalf Of Bill Schoenbart Saturday, May 06, 2006 4:03 PM formatting in Chinese terms In CHA postings, I am wondering why pinyin words often have numbers mixed in with them. Is that correct? Yes, it is just a way of writing the tone next to the pinyin sound. This internet medium doesn't have much in the way of support for formatting, including the accent marks on letters (two of the four accent marks aren't native to European languages, so they don't display correctly in many programs). Guest guest
Thanks! I know there were some others who were confused about this as well, so here is the detailed explanation that was provided to me by Thomas offline: 1 is the high " steady " tone 2 is the upward rising tone 3 is the down, then up tone (the curved one) 4 is the descending tone - Bill Schoenbart > >>>>>>>>>>> > The numbers are the tones (Chinese) 1-4 , remember the same pin yin term > could be a number of different characters > >>>>>>>>>>> > > > > Bill Schoenbart > PO Box 8099 > Santa Cruz, CA 95061 > > 831-335-3165 > plantmed
