While I agree with much of what Andrea said I don't think it needs to be that

way. I, and many others, focus on herbal therapy and do very little acupuncture

or none at all. There needs to be more public awareness and education.

I suggest you look at the American Herbalist Guild for more information about

practicing without a " license " also see Roger Wicke's website (sorry I don't

have the address handy), he has a plethora of info about the subject.

As an aside, Ben Zappin, L.Ac. is a long-time friend and former student. He

helped me start an herbal pharmacy in the mid 90's in Santa Cruz. When I left

town we often talked about him picking up the ball. He has done that and it is

going well. The pharmacy is called Five Flavors Herbal Pharmacy and it can be

found on Center Street downtown. Ben is a very good herbalist with knowledge of

both Chinese and Western herbs, as well as many native plants. I highly

recommend him as a practitioner and Five Flavors as a dispensory.

>But here in Santa Cruz there's a gentleman, Ben Zappin, who has set up an

herbal >pharmacy, where he fills prescriptions from other acupuncturists who

don't have the >time or space or turnover to have a full herb pharmacy in their

practices. He

>also does herbal consults with his own patients, and I don't think he does

>acupuncture; and he teaches classes on east-west herbalism. I don't

>actually know him and I don't know how his business is doing, but it

>sounded like a good idea to me. Of course there have always been chinese

>herbalists
