Guest guest
Hi Marcia, I was warned when I got that lavender plant that they like it drier than it generally is here, so give them good pace for air circulation, put them in a pot rather than directly into the ground, and stuff like that ... but maybe I need to try that soil blend you mentioned! Also, I'm considering keeping it in my back screened in porch area, its all open to the elements, but it won't get quite as wet in the heavy rains we get - only what comes in sideways through the screen What IS growing really well here is my pineapple sage! I have to post the pics I have of that one! That plant started off as a tiny little one stem specimen that was 4 " if it was that tall and is now several feet tall! It did shed a lot of leaves by late summer (October into early fall (January *lol*). I was considering pruning it back to the ground when I saw new leaves at the base, but it is now in bloom and filling in with new leaves all up and down the stems too, so I'm leaving it, only cutting dead or lanky branches. I've seen them get as tall as me here! I would love to pull out my stovetop still and do a distillation of that - even if I only get hydrosol and a couple drops of oil <grinz> *Smile* Chris (list mom) Handmade Natural Liquid Soap In Economy Sizes <http://www.alittleolfactory.com/liquidsoapbase.htm> http://www.alittleolfactory.com/liquidsoapbase.htm Marcia Elston They really love abuse, Chris . . . Maybe you were too kind. :-) The more your abuse them, the more oil they produce. As I remember, the perfect soil is 1/3 each of small pea gravel, sand and so-so (not rich) topsoil. No fertilizer. They like an arid climate generally, but even with our rain here on the west side of the Cascades, since we have hot, dry summers, they thrive. I got a plant last year, but it got unhappy and croaked .. *Smile* Chris (list mom)
