Guest guest
Hi, does anyone have some good advice on how to get rid of fleas on our cats and in our house? I don't want to use anything toxic. Thanks in advance! Anna
Guest guest
Hi Anna! So nice to see you here. I've owned precious furry angels for my entire adult life, and find that a flea comb is a great tool for both preventative maintenance, once you get the fleas under control, and for regaining control of this frustrating problem. It's a very fine toothed comb and the fleas can not fit through the little tines. Once you comb them out however, you need to be quick in containing them as they can jump incredible distances. I put my kitties on a counter under a good light, with a piece of white paper next to me. When I comb the hair with a flea comb, I put it on the white paper and separate the hair slowly to find the fleas. They are very hard shelled creatures, so you can't just smush them with your finger... I use the edge of the comb and you actually hear them pop, so you know you have eradicated them one at a time. It is a bit time consuming, and not very pleasant, but highly effective and no poison! Coupled with the use of diatamaceous earth, you can rid your cats and your home of the fleas without the use of any toxins. From the website below: Perma-Guard Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is totally organic and safe and contains less than 1% percent of Crystal & Silicon! Some of the uses for the Diatomaceous Earth include; household pets, gardens, flower beds, field crops, grain storage, and livestock feeding. Diatomaceous Earth is Mother Nature's product with no harm to the environment, pets or to people. Diatomaceous Earth is not an earth, it is the fossilized remains of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called DIATOMS. Diatomaceous Earth kills by physical action, not chemical, by puncturing the insect’s exoskeleton and absorbing its body fluids, thus posing no harm to warm-blooded life. Moreover, on any surface, these natural pesticide products have a remarkable repellency factor. As long as it is present, insects tend to stay away, making a serious infestation unlikely. Also, the more it is used, the more an environment is created that tends to make insects feel unwelcome. The only concern I have when using it is it's powdered consistency, as you don't want the animals to inhale it into their lungs, so application must be very controlled but in my experience, it's well worth the effort. Here is one place which carries it... I just did a google search of Diatamaceous Earth for the info: _ Garden Harvest Supply : Perma-Guard Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth_ (http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com/de_permaguard.aspx) _http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com_ (http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com) Good luck with this pesky problem. Guest guest
Hi Anna, Since essential oils are considered dangerous for cats, you don't want to use those. You can however use hydrolats. I have the following recipe: 30 ml lavender hydrolat and 30 ml lemon verbena hydrolat mixed with 60 ml of spring water. Apply this twice a day on the cat. You can spray, but most cats hate this. You can also wet a washcloth with it, and rub the cat with the washcloth. Also spray it in your house twice a day. Good luck! Guest guest
Rather than putting a white sheet of paper, get a bowl and fill it with soapy water. The fleas drown in the water.... Guest guest
I used rubbing alcohol in the bowl to dip the comb in when I had the problem. I wasn't taking any chances that one of them knew how to swim. Guest guest
I put out white bowls of water, with a drop of Dawn, at night, all over in the household, to catch fleas. It really works!! Guest guest
Dear Evelyn, This bothers me - you left rubbing alcohol in the animals coat? Didnt it make them sick? Diatomaceous earth spread down the spine will kill fleas - it tears the carapace. It can be sprinkled on the floor and swept into carpets and corners. Its also completely safe if the animal swallows it. For every flea you find on the cat, there are hundreds more waiting to hatch. Killing the fleas before they get on the animal is a better way of controlling them. Treating the evironment will do that. Me, I use Advantage from the vet, its totally safe, and totally effective. I'd rather not take a chance of my cats developing tape worm or other such nasties directly attributable from fleas. mary Well, Naturally - Evelyn Millican Sunday, January 22, 2006 4:33 PM Re: Re: Fleas in the house and on 3 precious cats I used rubbing alcohol in the bowl to dip the comb in when I had the problem. Guest guest
I'm sorry, I guess I didn't explain that very clearly. I would dip the comb in alcohol and then rinse it in a another before I used it again. I just didn't want to put back fleas I had already taken off, not to mention the eggs.
