OT:recycling US mail

Nancy,

I recycle boxes all the time. As far as the priority mail box,

just pull it apart where it is glued then turn it inside out and re tape

it. That way

you have a blank box to write on, they won't charge you extra, and

you are recycling. I turn almost all my boxes inside out.

Actually, the Priority Mail boxes from USPS have " USPS " stamped all

over the inside, so they know it's their box. Maybe you used an old

one successfully (before the USPS caught on to the practice). The

priority mail box I used just yesterday had " USPS " stamped on the

inside so there would have been no inside-outing.

I suppose if you wanted to take the time to wrap the box inside brown

paper or something you could get away with it, but that's not really

saving much.

Hi Karen,

Just was surprised the government wouldn't let you recylce a box.

Found out I was wrong.

Do use and have new one ro ship Priority.

Oh well, live and learn.

Hi Laura,

Just never thought I couldn't recycle a used box.

You could tell it was used. I did take all the tape off.

Guess I won't do that again.

Find another use for those boxes.

The problem doesn't come from you wanting to recycle boxes, it comes from

people ordering their shipping boxes free from the USPS and then flipping them

inside out and using whatever shipping method or company the first time.

While you're trying to do the right thing and recycle, there are many out there

who were doing this the first time and not having to purchase shipping boxes

for their business. It was costing the federal government (aka us taxpayers)

to supply these businesses. As usual, the rotten apples ruin it for the

masses. If nothing else, recycle the cardboard at a cardboard recycling site.

Contact your local solid waste management company and they should be able to

tell you where they are available. Or a local business that pays to recycle

cardboard may allow you to drop a box in just ask - all they can say is no.

Hope you don't get caught doing that...USPS frowns on that sort of thing.

I believe you CAN re-use a box, you just can't take a USPS priority

mail box, flip it inside-out, and use it for non-priority mail

shipments.

Actually, USPS isn't an actual part of the U.S. Government. Didja

know that? I didn't know that until about two years ago. I always

thought they were a government entity, too.

USPS is considered an " independent establishment of the Executive

Branch " (http://www.usps.com/postalhistory/welcome.htm), and don't

get operating money from the federal government. They get it from

the revenue from the sale of postage-related products. They're just

a business. If you tried to weblink to www.usps.gov, it sends you

automatically to www.usps.com. Try it, I just did! :)

There's your U.S. Social Studies lesson for the day!

Hi Karen,

No I didn't turn it inside out. Just took off all the postage, lables, tape.

Had I known I couldn't recycle the box, I would have found another one.

Was just shipping a bunch of books and cards to a friend.

Normally I ship priority. But didn't see a need for this stuff.

I re-use them all the time - until they start showing the wear and tear. Nearly

all the orders I ship out are priority mail.
