Guest guest
Hi Tammy, > Thank you so much Butch for all the valuable info. My pleasure fer'shur. > I guess now I just have to find the " least offensive " synthetic > preservative. Wish I could help .. but as I said, I don't deal with anything but Essential Oils, Carrier Oils and Hydrosols .. and I use no preservatives in any of them. However, I am 100% sure that folks on this list will come forward with recommendations .. its a good thread. I have often read .. that Germall Plus Powder and Liquid are good preservatives .. both synthetics. And I have often read .. that some good antioxidants are Rosemary Oil Extract or Oleoresin, Vitamin E, and Grapefruit Seed Extract. And I have often read .. that the shelf life of different creams, lotions, conditioners, cosmetics, etc., will be different based on the product used, the temperature the product is stored .. and the proper or improper handling of the product by the end user. Its claimed that most folks improperly use lots of items in that they contaminate them by touching the contents with fingers, etc. I know that the List Mom can come on line regarding this subject and I believe she uses either all Hydrosols or at least some Hydrosols in place of water. If we begin the process with sterile products, odds are great there will never be contamination .. but that's asking a bit too much when dealing with cosmetic type products. Beginning with sterile ingredients, including bottles and caps .. is important .. its also important when we pouring Hydrosols from large wholesale size containers into the smaller containers most folks use to store or sell them. I have NEVER used a preservative in any Hydrosol I sell .. they are sterile UNLESS/UNTIL they are contaminated by the end user. When a Hydrosol exits the still it is 100% sterile .. the barrels I use are new from the manufacturer and sterile. They remain closed until we open them to pump product out of the barrel and then they are placed in sterile containers. Every 90 days they are tested at Superior Labs, Inc., in Galloway, OH, an authorized testing agency holding Ohio EPA Water Approval No. 890 and USDA Accreditation Number 3983. Folks can test their Hydrosols there for $30 per test. The last test results are 09 September 2005 .. we got behind the power curve over the Christmas/New Year season .. but the latest test results will be in hand next week and I have no doubt that the results will be the same as we have seen over many years now. Results of the September test were that they were MORE PURE than the acceptable standard for drinking water. The standard for drinking water is a Plate Count of bacteria as high as 500 per 100 ml of pure water .. the highest plate count we have on any of our Hydrosols is 27 .. this is FAR MORE PURE than even bottled drinking water found on the grocery shelves. So .. considering the low cost of testing .. those who stock large quantities of Hydrosols can afford to test them. Contact numbers, etc., for Superior Labs is at http://www.av-at.com/hydrosol.html And .. the results of the tests prove that there is no need for a major supplier who follows the correct procedures (as outlined above) to use a preservative in Hydrosols. What happens after they are sold is another matter .. but I'm still not going to start using preservatives in my Hydrosols because customers don't want me to .. simple as that. ;-) Folks might ask about refrigeration .. the answer is .. refrigeration will help to slow the growth of critters .. but if there are no critters to begin with .. refrigeration is not necessary. A couple of my buyers won't buy Hydrosols in the summer because they believe that the heat will harm them while they're being shipped across country. Not true .. the Hydrosols have been exposed to boiling temperatures .. the only time heat could be a negative would be if the Hydrosol was contaminated .. then heat allows quicker bacterial/mold growth. I have no refrigerator large enough to store 50 kilogram drums .. nor do the distillers .. but the product is (at that time) sterile. I do, however, recommend end users store their smaller bottles of Hydrosols in a refrigerator. > For now, I'm off to go growl at the website selling GSE as a natural > preservative for lotions. Grrr..... Good luck .. bursting balloons is easier at a child's birthday party than it is when dealing with folks who use the balloons as a basis for their marketing campaigns. ;-) > thanks again! > -Tammy Yes'm .. welcome fer'shur .. and y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch .. http://www.AV-AT.com .. LuLu Lemon has started using silver in some of their athletic clothes to prevent the odor problem associated with the user of synthetic clothes... very interesting. http://www.lululemon.com/ -Josh
Guest guest
Since the topic came up, and I know folks are curious - here is the info on 2 of the newest products in the world of natural preservatives: Suprapein and Neopein http://www.bio-botanica.com/articles/articles.asp# From what myself and others I've talked to who have been working with the Bio-Botanica " -pein " items have determined is: they do their job preserving, and very little is needed, but they do each have a distinct herbal scent (some more than others, Biopein being the smelliest), so you have to work your fragrancing around that. Some things are easier than others to do that with *Smile* Chris (list mom) Concentrated Handmade Liquid Soaps All Natural, Perfect For The Body & Home <http://www.alittleolfactory.com/liquidsoapbase.htm> http://www.alittleolfactory.com/liquidsoapbase.htm
Guest guest
Hi Chris, I have found with Bopein can cause reactions. One " tester " broke out in red rash on her face. I found the " scent " difficult to work with. I also think some cosmetic chemists have questioned the results published by Bio-Bontanica Virginia West Aussie Christine Ziegler wrote: > > From what myself and others I've talked to who have been working > > with > the Bio-Botanica " -pein " items have determined is: they do their job > preserving, and very little is needed, but they do each have a > distinct herbal scent (some more than others, Biopein being the > smelliest), so you have to work your fragrancing around that.
