Guest guest
Ear infection? What kind of ear infection? are you talking about a sore infected? Or? Are you talking ear canal, or just floppy ear? For ear canal, my first reaction and strongest was... Uh UH no way would I put EO's in my dogs ear... My second reaction was... wait a minute, think about this and then " Uh UH, now way, no how would I put eo's in my dog's ear " . I wouldn't put them in my ears or my kids ears neither. I wouldn't put them in the chinchilla's ear, the hamster's ear, the guinea pigs ears, the cats ears, the chickens ears (do chickens HAVE ears?) or the Parakeets ears (same question... what about fish... do fish have ears... I've never seen a fish with ears, come to think of it, I seem to remember they process their information differently...)... Anyway, no ears. Except maybe the husbands when he's really ticked me off... THEN I would be tempted. Guest guest
Well, I have used a olive oil with a very few drops of lavender oil in an animal’s ears without bad results. Gotta be very cautious with this kind of thing, though. Dave _____ On Behalf Of Woobey Queen Friday, February 03, 2006 10:31 AM Re: dog with ear infection Ear infection? Guest guest
Hi Colleen, My labradortype dog just had an ear infection, and I used St-John-Wort oil with blue chamomile in her ear(1 drop EO per 10 ml carrier oil, 1 drop of this mixture in the ear). It did the trick. I've used it with myself and my kids too, sometimes St-Johns-Wort oil with cajeput EO. It helps tremendously. You have to be sure though that the eardrum isn't ruptured, then you can't put anything in the ear. Good luck! It seems lately he has been pawing a bit at the ears, and I think the Tea Tree would help? There is no sore, must be in the ear canal. We used to spend quite a bit on ear drops from the vet on a little dog we had(she passed on at 14)they never seemed to help her. I joined this group because I like to try natural solutions if possible. I would never want to hurt my animals! (I have a horse and 2 cats and 1 bird and this dog....we've cut back since not being on the acreage anymore ha ha). Do you think Lavender is a better choice? Guest guest
Saskia, Thank you so much for your input!!Great to hear from a Vet and aromatherapist!! Sadly I do not have Blue Chamomile Oil,but I do have Cajeput. Now this is a big question:Can I infuse regular Chamomile and St.Johns Wort plant(which I do have) into Oil and expect a decent result? I realize the true Oils would be much better. Guest guest
Hi Colleen, I think either tea tree or lavender is a good choice. Lavender seems gentler to me, but either one is a good application for a bacterial situation. You want to be sure the dog doesn’t have a burr or small bit of debris in the ear. I always have made a point of inspecting and cleaning my dogs’ ears with a cotton swab now and then. If the ear canal is red and inflamed, a few drops of lavender oil in a spoonful of sweet almond oil can be swabbed gently, but don’t try to insert a cotton swab into the ear canal if there’s any possibility of something being in the ear! You can also use an eyedropper to put a few drops of an oil mixture into the ear. Warm the oil just a bit. Dogs’ body temperature is a little higher than ours. Massaging the ear will help to disperse the oil in the ear canal, and the dogs usually like that part, too! Anytime I use EOs I use them sparingly, so I have not hesitated in the past to use them with dogs, diluted with either almond or another oil. I don’t think I’d use them with a cat though. Cats are, well, weird. Dave (who currently serves a cat and does not own a dog) Hi Dave, I figured A bit of Tea Tree in Olive Oil would be a good Choice. I would never drench his ears with it! I don't know much about infused oils and their strenght, but some on this list, like Ravda, do... Love, Saskia
Guest guest
I've had good experiences with goldenseal tincture. Check to see what % alcohol it is! Let the alcohol evaporate off in a dish, or dilute down. Be sure there is no broken skin. I apply the goldenseal on a swab which also cleans the ear. I would not use it as drops. wishing you a happier dog!
