Thanks, David. But a silicone isn't near being 'natural', is it?

(And I also would be interested in the author/title)

Well, silicones are derived from silicon, the most abundant mineral on earth

except for oxygen. Free silicon does not occur in nature. Here’s what

Rutledge says about silicones: “`Silicones are polymers based on silica

(sand) and processed to form different molecules. They are generally inert

and non toxic to skin. Widely used in skin and hair care products for

emolliency, water proofing, reducing stickiness, improving skin feel, and

hair conditioning. . .”

Dimethicone is another common silicone used in the personal care industry.

While they’re not natural, silicones are not petroleum based and for the

most part seem to do no harm. I do not know anything about the byproducts

of manufacturing, etc. You won’t find them in any of my products.

My reference is: “Product Of Misinformation: Demistifying Cosmetics and

Personal Care Claims, Terms and Ingredients” by Michael Rutledge, Tapestry

Press, © 2001.
