Guest guest
I may be asking a question that has no answer in this arena, but here goes: Following a neck injury in a car wreck two years ago, I learned that my cervical (neck) vertebrae have large calcium deposits and that the discs are shrinking. This is a progressive condition, and I’m now beginning to experience daily neck pain and headaches. So far, ibuprofen controls the pain, but it is not going to get better by itself. The chiropractor that I saw in the follow-up to the accident seemed to feel that surgery would eventually be my only option. When I rock my head back and forth I can hear the bones in my neck grinding against one another. I have no health coverage, cannot afford medical care, and refuse to go to the VA hospital which is 50 miles away anyhow. Fortunately I am mostly strong and healthy, and nearly always treat myself with alternate therapies. My thought is that to a certain extent at least, the muscles in the neck can learn to provide extra support. I’ve been able to teach myself different motions and ways of balancing my body that lead to whole pain-free days. I already take antioxidants and soft-tissue support such as MSM and glocosamine/chondroitin. My question is: is there anything in the aromatherapy/essential oils field that I can do to support this approach? What about massage oils? Herbs? Anyone? Guest guest
Oh Dave, I don't have any suggestions because I'm in the same boat as you and boy, can I sympathize! :-( I had whiplash over 20 years ago due to a car accident and now my neck is paying a big price. I'd be interested to know if any alternatives too. I do visit a chiropractor once in a while, but it's a short-lived fix. Guest guest
I find that heat helps, though of course only temporarily. So far, the best results I’ve had have come from my own concentration on retraining my body to hold my head up and how to move. It’s almost a martial-arts thing, though I have no training in that area. There’s something called the Alexander Technique that I looked into years ago, and this may be helpful too. Guest guest
Hi Dave I too had a whiplash injury 26 years ago, it took a few years before the debilitating headaches set in. I had 3 times a week chiropractic for a while, but found that as fast as the chiropracter adjusted it I could derange myself just going out and getting in my car. The headaches for me were the 3 day headaches from hell, and no painkillers would touch it. Decided after a became an aromatherapist that gentle would be the way, massage keeps it under control, gentle massage, weekly until I got relief. Now I can apply oils to myself when needed, but ongoing regular massage is the best. Note to self, book another massage. I also go to Feldenkrais classes, again very gentle, minimal movement, makes me taller, standing straighter with good neck alignment. Have also had osteopathic treatments too, again gentle realignment. My neck still creaks, groans and grinds and most likely always will. Be careful with the rocking of your neck to and fro when it is not in the correct place. Jocelyn.
