Shampoo bar recipe

So many folks asked me for my shampoo recipe I am posting it to the list.

Hope y’all enjoy it. I’ve had nothing but positive feedback on this one.

Your oils:

Coconut oil 12 oz (all measurements are by weight, even the water)

Palm oil 10 oz.

Olive oil 8 oz. (I use olive pomace oil which has a slightly different SAP

value than olive oil)

Castor oil 6 oz.

Hempseed oil 6 oz.

Begin by making a strong decoction of green tea and stinging nettles. Weigh

out 12oz. of this and put in the freezer. You’ll want it nearly frozen

before you add your lye.

I figured my lye discount at 3% because I knew I’d be doing some significant

superfatting. With olive pomace oil, this worked out to 6.25 oz. of lye.

Weigh out your oils and put them in the pot over low heat. You’ll want them

around 100° when you blend in your lye.

Measure out your essential oils and superfatting oils:

Castor oil 16 grams

Rosemary EO 6 g

Tea tree oil 6 g

Evening primrose oil 5 g

Clary sage EO 5 g

Virginia cedarwood EO 4 g

Ylang ylang EO 3 g

Also have on hand 2 Tbs each of powdered rosemary and powdered nettles. I

grew the rosemary and wildcrafted the nettles, but you can buy them online

or at a health food store.

When your tea is nearly frozen, take it from the freezer and add the lye.

Take precautions when handling the lye: use a pyrex bowl and don’t breathe

the fumes. The mixture will go from freezing to about 180° within about 5

seconds. Stir until the lye is dissolved and set aside to cool. I put it

in a bath of cool water to cool it more rapidly.

When your oils and lye are both about 100°, slowly pour the lye mixture into

the oils. Stir until trace, pour into molds. When it’s ready to come out

of the mold, slice it into bars and set them on a rack to cure for 3-4

weeks.

Your hair will love this.

OH THANK YOU DAVE.

This sounds so nice along with all the other recipes I am collecting

from the group. Someday when I am brave enough I will actually make

soap...the only thing missing is the Castor Oil.

Barbara, you should try it! It is not hard. Handling lye is not nearly the

big deal that some folks make of it. You just have to be careful with it is

all. You’ll make some mediocre soap when you’re first starting out, but

that’s the learning process. Once you get good at it you will wonder why

you ever bought those commercial detergent and chemical bars they call soap!
