Guest guest
Does anyone know if there are any regualtions or anything governing the resale of lye? HazMat regulations or anything? A couple of small, hobby soapmakers have asked me if I can sell them lye for their personal use, but I'm not sure if it's OK to do so . . . I asked the chemical company that I purchase lye in bulk from, and they said they didn't know of any, but that I should be sure I know the person because lye is used in the manufacture of illegal drugs (methamphetamines, I believe). But they never checked me out, and I'd think someone purchasing a 50 lb. bag would cause more suspicion than someone buying a pound or 2. Of course, I had my tax ID in hand . . . Any suggestions or comments will be appreciated. Thanks. Roxanne
Guest guest
There are strict regulations regarding the SHIPPING of lye..... As for selling without having to ship, you'd have to check with your local authorities for that one. You aren't supposed to ship lye at all through the USPS, and UPS has a hazmat fee for over 2# shipped. Other than that I don't know what the exact regulations are. Guest guest
A lot depends on the agreement the seller has with their shipping company. As for sending thru the mail, I spoke with 2 postal inspectors and was told that I can mail up to 2 pounds. There was a huge discussion about this not long ago on one of the soap making lists I'm on.
