Guest guest
Could you explain the difference in using EOs and Extracts? Are the amounts I use similar? I primarily make soaps. Can I use the vanilla extract on the grocery shelf just like some cocoa absolute extract? Thanks michelle
Guest guest
Michelle, you don’t say whether you’re making lotions, or soap, or what…extracts contain alcohol, which will mess up a recipe for bar soap. I don’t make liquid soap, but I’m under the impression that you can use alcohol in those recipes. Don’t take my word on that however. Dave Could you explain the difference in using EOs and Extracts? Are the amounts I use similar? I primarily make soaps. Can I use the vanilla extract on the grocery shelf just like some cocoa absolute extract? Guest guest
Hi Michelle, Sounds like you are becoming a soapmaker! If you are doing cold process soaps, you cannot add extracts at all. It will seize the soap - which is just another way to say it will instantly turn into a concrete-like substance. You must add either essential oil or a fragrance oil formulated for soapmaking. I'd like to suggest a couple of things for your soaping journey....go to , and do a search for " soapnuts " and join it. It is a very prolific bunch of soapers, 99% of whom are more than happy to answer questions about soaping. It has a huge membership (or at least it did last time I was there), and those guys and gals discuss anything and everything to do with soaping. Better sign up for the digest version! I'm sure you know there are many websites with info on soapmaking as well. Just a couple I can remember off the top of my head are one by Snowdrift Farm. Tina and her hubby run that, and as her hubby is a chemist, there is much information on that website. There's also Rainbow Meadows, a trustworthy supplier with high quality soaping ingredients. She also has a lot of information. I know there's many many more, most of them with recipes as well as information. Let me know if you need help finding them. Guest guest
Thanks for the help with extracts. I didn't know about the alcohol. I did a HP soap and it worked fine but the color was undesirable. Appreciate the soaping links. Michelle , BJ <pinemeadows wrote: > > Hi Michelle, > > Sounds like you are becoming a soapmaker!
