This fits into the theme.

I wrote it for some ADD groups.

The Canadian TV news had a nice balanced

article on the issue of ADHD drugs this

morning.

First they showed a mother whose child

had died as a result of Ritalin, then a

young woman who said she would feel like

killing herself without it.

My opinion on this issue, and all other health

matters, is this:

Educate the public, give them all the data

pro and con, and then for Earth's sake

let people make up their own minds.

Do not hand it out like candy, maintain

strict quality control, but don't outlaw

products either.

Different remedies work for different people.

One person's miracle drug will be another

person's nightmare.

A person in constant severe pain may well be

willing to risk a Viox-caused heart attack.

Let him make up his own mind, but do be honest

about the risk.

Governments' tendency to ban herbs and

supplements long before they touch

pharmaceuticals is a whole other topic.

We will never be able to keep everyone safe.

The search for total safety will only lead

to total tyranny, the way excess Yin flips

over and becomes Yang, and vice versa.

Every year some people die of anaphylactic

shock caused by insect stings.

Are we going to ban bees?

Every year some women die at the hands of

abusive partners.

Will we ban men, or imprison the women who

keep picking the wrong ones?

And so on.

To return to the topic of warnings: as long as

they don't restrict access they may well serve

a purpose. Side effects of ADHD drugs are

real and potentially serious.

Too many people think that a diagnosis of ADD

automatically means recourse to drugs.

It may be the best thing for you or your child.

But what is there to lose by trying Nature first?

Ien,

You had some very good points. The one thing I think I envy the most are

cultures that embrace more than one *standard* of care. When you think of the

cultures of the Orient/Asia, they have herbal remedies that have been around for

centuries, they have acupuncture, they have the studies of the meridian lines,

it's just like what you said, very balanced. That's where I wish we were as a

culture. And my hats off to the Cancer survivors out there :o) It wasn't my

intent to upset anyone, different treatments work on different people. It's

just so hard, because I wish we could have saved my dad. He went to Oasis of

Hope, a really well known cancer center, and everything we tried still didn't

work. So it's possible I'm letting my anguish of my dad's death, and the

helplessness I felt cloud my judgement on the good doctors that *are* out there.

I just really wish I could find one. :o) So please know it wasnt my intent to

upset anyone. It just really *really* sucks to see

someone in pain, and not be able to do anything to help allieviate it.

Much love

Melissa

I am very grateful for western medicine. I have CFS and Fibromyalgia and the

antidepressants, anti anxiety, pain medications that I use on a daily basis make

my life a little easier and a little is a lot when you have conditions like

these. Thank God for antidepressants and pain medicines...and of course anti

anxiety...... Actually, the antianxiety meds keep CFS at bay because adrenalin

can cause a relapse. So if I can keep myself from having adrenalin rushes I can

stay heathier. Sure I wish I could go all natural but at this time it is not

possible I love essential oils but they are like icing on the cake. I need my

drugs and smile at them every day....
