Guest guest
Hello Everyone, I have not sent these out in a while but thought they might be of help again to others. These are used for chemo and radiation patients as well as anyone with really dry skin. Simple formulas that are based with the use of whole oils and no added synthetic items. There is a broad spectrum preservative needed in any lotion or cream, but that is a given to make a product that keep well. I just prefer not to get into using the synthetic ingredients that we see in the mass marketed products. These are just a few formulas and info about products that I started making for my sister, other cancer patients and myself. I hope that they are of help to you whether you are making them for other patients or your self. My Prayer is that they will be of joy for you. Any aromas are hard for those having to endure chemo or radiation or both and that includes even the smell of foods, so it will be hard even with using infused herbs to know what people will be able to tolerate and not tolerate. If you wish to make something that will be good for the skin there are a few formulas below that I still make for my sister, myself and friends that are going through treatments and those that are done with them. I usually use no aromas, even EO’s in them, but if I do in a lotion, it is a very light hand so that it will not be to much for them. I have also found that just adding a few drops of Lemongrass to the EO’s can help with making them more tolerable for the senses for those of us that are super sensitive to aromas. I did find that even though I was very sensitive to aromas, those EO’s like Lemongrass, Lavender, Rose Geranium and many mixtures of EO’s I enjoyed very much and found that it helped to keep a tiny bottle on hand to sniff when I was in a place that there was an aroma that was making me feel sick. Because the body is already being inundated with some major drugs and/or radiation, the use of other synthetics to the skin is not what should be done. This is my opinion, but then I don’t care for the synthetic feel good quickie stuff that is in the mass marketed products and has found their way into our industry as well. They do not have the lasting value for the skin like good whole oil/butters and vitamin/herbal filled products can. Yes we need a broad spectrum preservative if we wish to make a product, i.e. lotion or cream, etc. that is water based. There is not such thing as a fully broad spectrum preservative that is “natural”. Such a tiny amount of preservative is needed to give a shelf life from 6 months to 2 years. I usually put a shelf life of 6 months and strongly recommend to my customers that they use it within that time frame, but they mostly use it well before that date and call needing more. I also recommend that when making any lotion/cream, no matter who it is for, to make it fresh so that it will be fresh and have a good shelf life. Put the date that it was made on the label in the bottom corner as a reference for yourself if you do happen to keep a bottle or so because you made a little more. You can use liquid silk if you don't have silk fibers and I use about 1 to 1 1/2 oz. for this size batch. I also have made these with several different very strong herbal teas. One fav is Calendula, Chamomile, Lavender and Comfrey Root as the tea and also taking some of each herb and powdering and sifting it and adding to the oils as they are warming. The soap below is a soap that I made for my sister back in 2001 when she was diagnosed. It is still her fav and the fav of several other cancer patients as well. Kathy's Sheaemol Luxry Bar #3 Castile Type Fits Medium Slab Mold and #6 Log 4 oz. Emu Oil (unrefined) 10 oz. Shea Butter (unrefined) 14 oz. Coconut Oil 14 oz Palm Kernel 43 oz. Olive Oil Pinch of Silk Fibers (added to the lye water right after adding the lye. Stir well to dissolve the fibers) (optional) 1 Tbsp. of Honey (added in the middle) 1.5 Tbsp. Vitamin E (added at trace mix with FO or EO) 1 oz. Evening Primrose Oil (added at trace mix with FO or EO) 28 oz. Distilled water or 2/3 water and 1/3 milk 11.50 oz. Lye (approx 8% superfatting) This is a variation of the first Cocoa/Shea soap that I made when I was first diagnosed. This has become a fav of mine as well as others. TLC Soaps and Sundries Cocoa/Shea Butter Dream Soap Fits #3 Log Mold 1 oz. Castor Oil 10 oz. Palm Kernel 6 oz. Cocoa Butter 6 oz. Unrefined Shea Butter 16 oz. Olive Oil 1 oz. Evening Primrose (add at trace) 1 oz. Sweet Almond (add at trace) 1 Tbsp. Vitamin E (add at trace) I mix these with the EO or FO I am using, if I use one. But mostly I make it without any scent added. 5.20 oz. Lye (approx 8% superfatting) 12 oz. Water or water/milk This if a Lotion that I made to go with the Cocoa/Shea Soap. I really love this one and made a large amount before all my surgeries and treatments and it is still a great enjoyment for me to use as well as make for others. TLC Soaps and Sundries Cocoa/Shea Butter Aloe Lotion Extra Rich Approx 17 oz Liquid Phase 6 1/2 oz. Distilled Water 6 1/2 oz. Aloe Vera Juice 1 tsp. Liquid Silk Amino Acids 1/4 tsp. Glycerin 1/4 tsp. Germall Plus Powder Preservative Oil Phase 1/2 oz. E-Wax 1 oz. Stearic Acid 1 oz. Fractionated Coconut Oil 1/2 oz. Meadowfoam Seed Oil 1/4 oz. Emu Oil 1/4 oz. Evening Primrose 1/4 oz. Shea Butter (unrefined) 1/4 oz. Cocoa Butter 1/2 tsp. Jojoba Add these to the oils if you like or after mixing the liquid and oil phase together 1/2 Tbsp. Vitamin E 5 to 7 squeezed capsules of Vitamin A & D This was a hard one to break down from the gallon size that I originally formulated, but is as close as I can get it and makes a wonderful lotion in this amount as well. I do not scent this one but one could use just a few drops of Lavender EO or other Essential Oils of choice but make sure to use a light hand as many going through cancer treatment find scents hard to handle at times. Heat the Oil Phase and the Liquid Phase separately. I only heat the Liquid Phase to about 120° or so and add my Glycerin and the Preservative to it. I mix everything together when they are at about 120° or so and use a Wire Whisk that is just used for making Lotions, Creams, etc. to help the emulsion. Because this is such a small batch the Stick Blender that I use when making a gallon or 2 will not work, but the Wire Whisk will do fine. Hand stir it as well with a rubber spatula that is only used when making Lotions, Creams, etc. and use a cool water bath to help it cool down faster, I do that with all my batches. This is an Extra Rich thick formula and is more for those with extra dry skin and is very good for those going through Chemo to help with the dryness that those drugs cause and the burning that Radiation can cause as well. The addition of the Vitamins to the formula is just one of the helpers and my feedback is that it is the addition most favored as the results in time were much more favorable. There are several other ways that I used this formula including Herbal Infusions with the water and/or Aloe Juice and making herbal oils using this basic formula. So you can add your own touches, as you like by using the herbs that you would like to add. Make sure though not to use herbs that are astringent as the skin that is extremely dry does not need those properties. A favorite combo is Rose Petals, Lavender Buds, Calendula Blossoms, Comfrey Root and Leaf, Oatstraw and Marshmallow Root made into a very strong tea and added as part of the water for the Lotion along with Aloe Juice. TLC Skin Loving Lotion #1 First make a mixture of the EO's below. Put them in glass, Amber or Cobalt Blue if you have it. If not a clear glass will be fine and just cover the glass to keep it out of light. Allow these to marry for several hours at least and if you have time allow them to marry for 48 hours before using. 1 part Lavender 1 part Chamomile 1 part Tea Tree 1/2 part Ylang Ylang 1/2 part Patchouli If you have any Rose Otto on hand a few drops of that is good also. 13 oz. Distilled Water 1/2 oz. E-Wax 1 oz. Stearic Acid 3/4 oz. Coconut 1/2 oz. Sweet Almond 1/2 oz. Neem 1/2 oz. Emu 1/4 oz. Jojoba 1 tsp. Calendula infused oil 1/4 tsp. Glycerin (optional) 4 to 6 capsules of Vitamin A & D 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of Vitamin E Use about 1/8 tsp of the EO mixture or a bit more or less if you like. This is a newer formula that I made a few batches of and it did so well for a few ladies, I thought it would be a good one for others as well. Just a simple 1 herb formula. Calendula Body Lotion Liquid Phase 7 oz. Aloe Juice 6 oz. Calendula Water 1 tsp. Liquid Silk Amino Acids 1/4 tsp. Vegetable Glycerin (optional) 1/4 tsp. Germall Plus Powder (preservative) OR 1/2 tsp. Germall Plus Liquid 1/2 oz. Emulsifying Wax 1 oz. Stearic Acid 1/2 oz. Coconut Oil 1/2 oz. Evening Primrose Oil 1/2 oz. Sweet Almond 1/2 oz. Emu 1/2 oz. Meadowfoam Oil 1 tsp. Calendula infused oil 4 to 6 squeezed capsules of Vitamin A & D 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of Vitamin E or 3 to 6 1000 I.U. capsules squeezed into the mix This is a formula that has not water in it and because of that I do not use any preservatives. TLC Soaps and Sundries Whipped Velvet Body Butter #3 1 oz. Meadowfoam Seed Oil 1 oz. Jojoba 1 oz. Evening Primrose Oil 1 oz. Sweet Almond Oil 1 1/2 oz. Shea Butter (Unrefined Golden Yellow) 1 1/2 oz. Cocoa Butter 3 oz. Stearic Acid 1 tsp. Vitamin E or 6 1000 I.U.s squeezed into the mixture 10 squeezed capsules of Vitamin A & D Oil You can use a bit of Lavender Essential Oil if you like or just leave it natural. The natural warm aroma of the Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter are very nice in this one. I could have used these for a family member that just passed away and we never even thought that a milder type of soap would have given them more comfort. I lived too far away to see them so did not pick up on it but you have made me come to see things in a different light and as soon as I get the courage back to making soap I will give your recipes a try so I have some on hand for another who is in need. Thank you for your thoughtfullness. Barbara
