Buckley's Mixture (Coughs & Congestion)

Active Ingredients:

Each teaspoonful (5 mL) contains: 153 mg Ammonium Carbonate, 267 mg Potassium

Bicarbonate, 22 mg Menthol, and 2.2 mg Camphor.

How bad is Ammonium Carbonate?

I won't lose sleep over it, it is

not needed very often, thank goodness.

But it sounds wicked.

Smelling salts.... just don't look at how they used to be manufactured

on the wikipedia link below :-) Hmmmm no wonder it tastes so bad!

For home remedies, my mom always let us suck on a spoon with honey, and

would treat our sore throats (sometimes the cause of our cough) with

making us gargle with golden seal powder dissolved in warm water

(YUCK!... way worse than Buckley's IMHO)

[Dave:] My grandma was always able to produce a bag of natural horehound

drops from somewhere. These were also useful for coughs.
