Guest guest
Hello Everyone! Well, it’s that time of year to be outside and I have a huge question – are there any known natural sunscreens out there? I’m looking for somewhere in the SPF of 20+. If there is not – where can you purchase standard sunscreen to add to existing facial crèmes? Then, where do you send your finished product to be tested/validated for marketing? Any insight & help will be GREATLY appreciated! Have a Blessed Day! Tammy D. The Mud QueenTM http://www.DeadSeaBulkMaterials.com Hi Tammy, Here is a post I made to my other local list about sunscreens about a week or so ago ... I hope some of the info helps you out. *Smile* Chris (list mom) All Natural Handmade Olive Oil Liquid Castile Soap Base <http://www.alittleolfactory.com> http://www.alittleolfactory.com Christine Ziegler [chrisziggy] Sunday, April 09, 2006 8:48 AM 'houstonorganic ' RE: [houstonorganic] Sunscreen? Hey Shelia ( & All), Thanks for the input! I agree about being a bit skeptical and cautious about the chemicals in sunscreens ... especially some of the ingredients are suspected carcinogens (the DEA and TEA for example), others are known irritants and can cause rashes (benzophenone, octyl-methoxycinnamate and PABA) and others can mess up the endocrine system (such as octyl-methoxycinnamate(octinoxate)), etc .... I tend to be a big hat kinda girl, but sometimes around here I find a sunscreen is necessary .. especially with my 2 little kids who aren't going to keep their hats on ands sit in the shade nicely! The following natural plant materials do have sunscreening and sun protection abilities, but legally I couldn't make up anything with them and tell anyone that they have any kind of SPF cause the FDA classifies sunscreen/blocks as drugs and they have to be approved by the FDA to be called such, yada yada .. Doesn't mean we can't use them for ourselves though! <grinz> Avocado Oil Shea Butter Sesame Oil Aloe Vera Gel Rice Bran Oil Cold Pressed Olive Oil Red Raspberry Seed Oil Sea Buckthorn Seed and Berry Oils .... and of course, probably one of the most effective and proven safe broad spectrum sunblocks (and it is FDA approved too - Zinc oxide - it protects against BOTH UVA & UVB rays. Only drawback is in large amounts, even micronized zinc can make the sunblock lotion look white, but it works! Below are some recipes from the House Of Strauss' Be Wise In the Sun article ... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ <http://houseofstrauss.co.uk/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=56> http://houseofstrauss.co.uk/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=56 MAKING YOUR OWN SUNSCREEN If you still feel that you want some protection, then there are four recipes that follow. The first two are better termed 'sun filters' the oils within them offer low SPF, perhaps around SPF 4 - 6, but that is not a guarantee. Oils such as avocado, sesame, rice bran and shea butter have natural sun filtering and moisturising properties. Sesame Oil is a potent antioxidant and will neutralize free radicals which build up under the skin from exposure to sun. The last two recipes contain zinc oxide, available from herbalists or perhaps chemists, offers a mechanical sun-block. NATURAL PROTECTION CREAM 3 tbsp. unrefined sesame oil 1 tbsp. unrefined avocado oil 1 tbsp. unrefined jojoba oil 1 tbsp. walnut or almond oil 1 tbsp. shea butter 2 tbsp. cocoa butter 1 tsp. beeswax 1 tsp. soy-lecithin liquid 2 tbsp. aloe-vera gel 2 tbsp. rose or lavender water ½ tsp. borax powder 20 drops carrot-seed essential oil - Melt the first 4 oils, butters and beeswax in a double boiler over medium heat until just melted. - Add the soy-lecithin, and stir to blend. Remove from heat. - In a small saucepan, gently warm the aloe-vera gel and rose or lavender water, and stir in borax powder until dissolved. Remove from heat. - When the oil and water mixtures are still warm to the touch and about the same temperature, set the small saucepan into a bowl of ice. Drizzle in the oil mixture while mixing rapidly with a small whisk; a cream will quickly form. - Add carrot-seed essential oil and blend thoroughly. - Store in a glass jar with a lid LOW PROTECTION SUN OIL 21/2 tbsp sesame oil 21/2 tbsp coconut oil 4 tsp grapeseed oil 20 drops petitgrain essential oil 2 drops lavender essential oil - Mix these ingredients together, store in a glass bottle and apply liberally before you go out into the sun and every half hour to hour that you are exposed to the sun. SUNBLOCK 1 1 cup zinc oxide paste ½ cup sesame oil ½ cup orange blossom water, at room temperature ½ cup distilled water, at room temperature - Place the zinc oxide paste and sesame oil into the top of a double boiler and mix as best as you can. - Heat gently, stirring constantly for 3 minutes. - Remove from the heat and add the orange blossom water and distilled water, mixing thoroughly. - Store in a wide mouthed jar with lid To use: 1. Dab on the skin. Do not rub in. The more opaque the product is on you, the more effective the sunblock. SUNBLOCK 2 2.5oz(70ml) sesame oil 1.5oz(40ml)cocoa oil 1/2oz(15ml) beeswax 4oz(100ml) distilled water 2tbsp(30ml) zinc oxide (available from a herbalist) 25 drops grapefruit seed extract as a preservative, available from healthfood stores. - Melt the oils and beeswax in a double boiler over medium heat. Remove from the heat. - Add the water and mix with an electric blender until thick and creamy. - Add the zinc oxide and GSE. - Keeps for 6 months in a sealed jar ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Smile* Chris <http://www.alittleolfactory.com/> http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
This is what I have in my files on sunscreens, HTH Zo Concentration of Sunscreens & SPF SPF 2-5 SPF 6-11 SPF 12-19 SPF >20 Titanium Dioxide <4 % 8 % 12 % 20 % Titanium Dioxide, Micronized 2 % 4 % 6 % 10 % Zinc Oxide 5 % 10 % 15 % 25 % Zinc Oxide, Micronized 3 % 7.5 % 12 % 20 % **************** Some plant oils contain natural sunscreens. Sesame oil resists 30% of UV rays, while coconut, peanut, olive, and cottonseed oils block out about 20%. Mineral oil doesn't resist any UV rays and dissolves the sebum secreted from oil glands that helps inhibit water evaporation from the skin. Aloe vera is a well-known sun care product and is included in many natural sun care products for its soothing and healing properties. It is also known as the anti-burn plant. The gel from aloe is believed to stimulate skin and assist in new cell growth. It is used to relieve sunburn, blisters or heat rash, or is mixed with sunscreens to moisturize skin. Aloe in a highly concentrated and pure form helps alleviate immune suppression by ultraviolet radiation in mice.18 Tea tree oil is an ancient aboriginal remedy. It is an effective antiseptic, fungicide and germicide. It is a popular component of many sunscreen formulations that relieve sunburn by increasing blood flow in capillaries, bringing nutrients to damaging skin. Walnut extract is obtained from the leaves and shells of Juglans regia L. It is said to contain a naphthoquinone that reacts with keratin, forming a " sclerojuglonic " compound. It is this reaction product that provides UV protection.19 Rhatania root extract is a light yellow, oil-soluble liquid is extracted from rhatania root, a South American shrub officially known as Krameria triandra. Spectrophotometer testing indicates that as a concentrated extract it absorbs 25-30% of the amount of UV radiation typically absorbed by octyl methoxycinnamate. Based on these readings, the extract appears to display a somewhat broader, albeit lower, absorption range, as it absorbs slightly more UV light in the 340-380nm range than the organic sunscreen does.20 Vitamin E has been commonly used as a free radical scavenger and an emollient too. ***************** In another study, the same research team found that black tea, green tea, grape seed and cranberry extracts were all promising antioxidants for fighting skin cancer when applied topically. Both studies were presented at the 229th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, in San Diego on March 14. ********** sesame seed oil resists 30% of uv rays coconut, peanut, olive, & cottenseed oil block 20% of uv red rasberry seed oil resists 28-50% ov uv ********** Vit c Vit e ferulic acid Milk thistle seed help with uv protection ********* jojoba oil spf 4 shea butter spf
