Let folks know there 's a difference between soap made with, say, coconut and palm oil only, and soap made with shea butter, or avocado oil, or cocoa butter... with pure essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances. Guest guest
I agree, Marge, but the issue was actually the weight being missing......that IS required - at least in the USA. : ) I also agree about listing the ingredients on my labels for soap because then the customer knows exactly what they are getting - they don't have to guess, and I do use good oils and butters, so why not use that to my advantage? Cindy - if you are selling it as 'just plain soap' it doesn't need an ingredient listing... but if you are making (or IMPLYING) any claims for it, then it needs a full ingredient listing. [Dave:] OK, got a question: since my bars are hand-cut, my labels say: “Average weight 4.1 oz.” Does that meet the legal requirement, or am I supposed to weigh each and every bar lest I’m off a few grams? _____
Guest guest
You have to say " at least " not approximately. I found this out recently, as I too used to have Approx. 4.0 oz. by wt. on my label. Now they say " At least 4.0 oz. by wt. " and yes - before I package them, I weigh each and every bar. Don't forget that as soap cures, the weight will drop slightly. So if you're borderline, go by the lower number to stay safe. : ) Most of my bars are between 4.2 and 4.5 oz., so I figure I'm safe in saying " At Least 4.0 oz. " - know what I mean? If the bars vary widely, 'sort them'... 4 oz, 5 oz, etc. but ALWAYS label as less than actual weight. You can give more than the label says, but you can't give less! [Dave:] OK, that makes sense. I actually have thought of making different sizes, say 3 oz and 4.5 oz, as a way of dealing with the fact that some of my soaps are frightfully expensive to make. _____ -- Version: 7.1.385 / Virus Database: 268.4.4/318 - Release 4/18/2006 -- Version: 7.1.385 / Virus Database: 268.4.4/319 - Release 4/19/2006
