Guest guest
Hi Liz, We operate out of Friendsville, Maryland .. so I'll give a few opinions on the below. (Snipped) > I wanted to open a home based business a few years back and was > told by the state of Maryland you cannot order in essential oils > wholesale and resell the products (mainly perfumes) out of your > home. Would selling them over the internet be the same? During my 30 years in the Army I got used to folks saying this or that could or couldn't be done because someone higher up said so. Often my young lieutenants would say, " Division told me this or that. " I would ask them if they talked to the duty driver or the Division Commanding General .. or someone in between. In most cases .. I learned they had talked to the wrong folks. ;-) The answer to your question is at the County Court Clerk's office. The place where you apply for and renew your business license. Before I established my business in MD I had lots of bad info .. but when I went to the Courthouse most of that bad info was swept away by correct info; not all .. but most. ;-) Our town is unincorporated but there are some weird rules .. certain buildings have " grandfather " clauses that exempt them from those rules .. things like where you can place a sign, etc. There ARE folks operating in our county out of their homes .. meaning they have a shop and a home in the same dwelling .. with a sign outside indicating what kind of shop they have. In addition to county requirements .. if your town is incorporated they will have their own set of Mickey Mouse laws .. similar to the old Blue Laws found along the Eastern Seaboard. But those laws are easy to get a handle on from either the county seat or the town hall. > Also what is a approved kitchen? I asked this same question a few days ago .. but since then someone has written me off line and told me that it is a USDA or FDA (or both) depending on this or that .. approved kitchen and it goes hand in hand with food handler's permits and such. Then it connected and made sense because we were advised that we might need food handling humma-humma some years back but it was determined that we didn't need this. We were (still are) selling a number of Near Eastern foods but they are all prepackaged .. if we had opened packages and portioned out sales we would be required to have food handling training, permits, approved kitchen, etc. > Would this apply to making perfumes? Ask the county. And the following applies to any and all folks who need to get information from civil servants .. beware when you talk to those who see themselves as being official .. especially in the small towns .. often they have been on the job for 25 years but what they really have is 1 year of experience 25 times. The difference between " yes " and " no " is very often not in what you want to do .. but in how your present it. > Thanks, > Liz Welcome fer'shur. Y'all have a good one .. and keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com Wholesale/Retail GC Tested EO, Rose Products, Tested Hydrosols and other nice goodies shipped to you from our store/warehouse in Downtown Friendsville, MD.
