Today, the correct usage of the word Attar is to describe those oils

produced in India that are co-distilled with Sandalwood.

[Dave:] Now that I think of it, this did contain sandalwood. I picked it

up by mistake. I got this at work. We closed out a bunch of the Oshadhi

EOs, and there was a vial of rose otto and one of the attar with sandalwood.

I intended not to get the sandalwood, but the bottle was tiny, the print was

tinier, and I didn’t have my reading specs handy. Anyway, it made some

wonderful soap which I’m saving as a gift for my daughter, Rose, when she

comes to visit us in July.

Thank you, Butch, for your ever-ready advice and expertise. You add a lot

to this group, and I’ve learned a lot from you.

Hi Jacque, Dave .. other good folks ..

Gonna answer two posts with one.

> Is turkish rose otto similar to bulgarian rose otto?

Yes .. they are both Hydro Steam Distilled from the Damask Rose (Rosa

damascena) .. and both are from the most ideal Damask Rose growing areas

in the world .. the Rose Valley of Isparta, Turkey and the Kazanluk

Valley of Bulgaria.

> I have the Bulgarian, but I am almost out. I would like to purchase some,

> but I am not familiar with it.

Then .. its about time you met the Turkish Rose Otto. ;-)

> Thanks

> Jacque

Welcome you are fer'shur.

Peggy asked:

> How much rose attar did you use per lb of soap?

And Dave replied:

> It was a teeny tiny bottle, I think it was half a cc or .5 ml. Cost

> about $22. Used it in 2 lbs of soap, along with powdered rosebuds.

A bit too costly Dave .. a full gram should cost around $18. Buy 3 ml

and it costs around $16 a ml .. 5 ml around $14.50 a ml, and so on.

Peggy asked:

> Is attar different from EO?

And Dave replied:

> No, I think it's the same, but I'm shooting from the hip here.

> Butch is the one that would know.

I think the question is .. " Is Attar different from Rose Otto? "

In fact, they are NOT the same thing .. but there is a lot of misuse of

both terms ..

The term Attar is a commonly misused term. It should not be used to

describe the oil from Rosa damascena, but too often it is.

The word " Attar " originated from the Ottoman Turkish word " Atir "

(undotted " i " ) - pronounced " ahtur. " It simply means " sweet smelling or

fragrant " .

Today, the correct usage of the word Attar is to describe those oils

produced in India that are co-distilled with Sandalwood.

The term " Otto " comes from Ottoman .. as in Ottoman Empire .. which is

now the Republic of Turkey. Long ago, the Europeans assigned this

handle to the distilled oil of Damask Rose .. based on the Origin.

The above questions .. and many others .. are answered at this URL
