Guest guest
I'm 63 and I remember a buncha cars around home that had to be cranked to start .. and the terms " crank'er up " is still used quite a bit in the USA. [Dave:] After high school I had a 1959 and a 1961 Triumph TR3. Gawd, what great cars those were! Both had a hand crank just like the old Model A. Remember SU carburetors? Then I had a 1960 Rambler American. Got 35 miles to the gallon with a flathead six. Look under the hood today and all you see is a mass of, um, stuff. In the old days you could just about get under the hood with the engine and walk around it. These days I drive a 1994 Ford Aerostar with almost 300,000 miles. Runs better than any car I’ve had in years. Gets around 20 mpg which is pretty good for a van. Best car I ever owned was a 1964 Volvo sedan. Worst was a 1972 Volvo wagon. Back when I drove those Triumphs, I could do a week’s worth of shopping including dog food and household cleaning supplies for under $10. Minimum wage was something like $1.65. My rent on a little house (not an apartment) was $45 a month. This was in 1969, in San Diego. That year, my folks bought a house on an acre just outside San Diego for $27,500. My dad sold the place less than 10 years later for $310,000. Housing has never come back down. _____ -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.7.2/349 - Release 5/26/2006 -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.7.2/349 - Release 5/26/2006
