Go figure! [Dave:] Right on. You ever wonder about the FIRST person to eat something like a snail? A gourmet? No way, he was starving! You know, I would absolutely love to know how folks figured out that the way to make olives edible is to soak them in lye! _____ -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.7.2/349 - Release 5/26/2006 -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.7.2/349 - Release 5/26/2006
Guest guest
I'm just wondering who is the one who gets to milk it ? I've milked cows and I've milked goats but I think I would draw the line at milking a water buffalo Paula .......... in Michigan I used to have super powers but my therapist took them away water buffalo yogurt. ok....eeeewww!! And this is only because I can not get the NG pictures out of my mind of this huge beast with a constantly runny nose!!!! ;p Michelle
Guest guest
Hey Zo, Lynn .. other good folks .. > Sweet milk is fresh milk, buttermilk is milk left after making > butter (use to be) now it is man made and has strange ingredients > in it. When you had sweet milk you usually had sour milk in the > ice box too (dates back before refrigerators). > Zo Right you are on that one. Folks had the choice of using the milk as Sweet Milk or making Butter and having Buttermilk. > Butch, I thought I was the only person that thinks sweet milk > would gag a maggot I love Buttermilk, don't remember ever drinkin > sweet milk and I can remember back to 1 year old!!!! Lynn My mother told me that I stopped drinking milk when she took the bottle away from me .. can't remember how old I was then but I know that until this day sweet milk gags me .. can't get it down. Used to joke about my tours in the 'Nam .. told folks I was too damn stubborn to ever let the idjits get info from me via torture .. but if'n they had known about my aversion to sweet milk .. they coulda got all the info they wanted if'n they tried to force me to drink a spoonful. ;-) Since we're into nostalgia .. I remember the Ice Box .. lots of folks around my little town had them .. so naturally, we had an Ice House. I can recall when Ice Boxes were slowly replaced by Frigidaire and the Ice House back home closed shop. It was not that country folks couldn't afford to buy a Frigidaire .. it was the idea of selling something new to folks who were getting along well without it. ;-) And to this day .. down South many folks still call a refrigerator a " Frigidaire. " Come to think on it .. lots of folks have shortened the name of Refrigerator to " Fridge " . Reckon maybe that might be a hold over from Frigidaire? ;-) Used to go to my Great Aunt Nannie's house some weekends .. she had a Jersey cow that gave more Milk than she and Uncle Phil could use .. so she sold Milk .. and Butter and Buttermilk. Being a youngun I always got the job of churning .. and at first it was kinda fun but it got old fast. ;-) I also remember when Margarine became the hot item. What folks around home were buying at the time was a plastic package of clear vegetable oil and inside was a capsule with coloring .. they'd pinch the package and break the capsule then work the mess around (inside the package) till it had a color similar to butter. There's a long history behind this .. has to do with the dairy lobby against the oleo producers .. and to this date there are still restrictions on margarine .. like the below which prohibits the sale of margarine in sizes larger than 16 oz. http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=browse_usc & docid=Cite:\ +21USC347 > I know what buttermilk is...nasty! But what is sweet milk? > )) > Michelle Some of the brands of cultured, store bought Buttermilk are pretty bad. I worked in Philly and lived near Wilmington for 2 years and never found a brand that I liked .. but around the TN-KY area we had George Atkins Dairy and last time I looked they were still producing some larpin gud Buttermilk. Gotta be real cold and a few shakes of salt in it is good. I reckon its all a cultural thing. Maybe Northern folks didn't have access to the same dairy products Suthran folks had years back. And a big one in the USA is Sour Cream .. can't find it here in Turkey but we have a drink called Ayran .. water and Yoghourt and a few other things mixed up .. and we eat a lotta Plain Yoghourt .. cook with it too .. we go through a couple of liters a week .. but many Americans won't eat it plain .. they want the fruit yoghourt. ;-) Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
