Guest guest
Hi Chris, Funny you should mention SJW - I am picking the blossoms daily and placing a mason jar with olive oil. Use it in our " Everything Salve " with a few other wonderful herbs. Before my plants were big enough I ordered fresh blossoms overnighted from: Healing Spirits http://www.infoblvd.net/healingspirits/ Mathias and Andrea Reisen 9198 State. Guest guest
Hi Bobbi, Chris . . . St. Johnswort isn't ready yet here in the PNW. We are processing arnica infused oil right now. Flowers are wilting as we speak, getting ready for their long repetitive infusion period in quality olive oil, then resting, resting to insure all moisture content is ultimately removed. We now purchase organic flowers from a lovely organic farm at about 2,000 feet on the East side of the Cascades. I would suggest to anyone looking to find wildcrafters that you consider cultivating your own or arranging with an organic farm to grow for you. Arnica is fast becoming scarce and will be extinct if we don't watch ourselves. We may se the same scarce situation with St. Johnswort, which is also easily cultivated, however, many states classify it as a noxious weed and it is illegal to cultivate. Needless to say, all wildcrafters are not ethical and we are seeing decimated stands that are not recovering from year to year. Both of these oils need to be made with fresh flowers. Most wildcrafters will ship whole stems, so remember your final quantity will be much reduced after you cap flowers and discard stems. Also, since they should be processed after only wilting for approximately 24 hours (and this is best done spread out so air can circulate), you will have to pay for overnight shipping to prevent mold or rot. All in all, this could be quite costly. In most cases, it would probably be best to purchase the prepared infused oil from those companies you know and trust who make it closer to the plant source. This also helps protect the species from overharvest. Be Well, Marcia Elston http://www.wingedseed.com <http://www.wingedseed.com/> " Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot.
