Guest guest
I am trying to learn as much as I can about Essential Oils and Herbs. I can't buy books at this time so I have been serffing the internet. I was able to find out what some of the benifits are in EO but don't know the ones that are safe to use orally like peppermint. Will some kind person point me to where I may find this kind of information? Lady D
Guest guest
Hello Lady D This is a very good question. Please use extreme caution when taking essential oils internally. Essential oils are VERY powerful and can cause more harm then good if not used properly. It is also critical to make sure the essential oils you purchase are of therapeutic grade meaning free of chemicals and pesticides. Make sure your supplier offers a Certificate of Analysis sheet for any oil you plan to ingest. Now to answer your question. Most spice oils such as rosemary, thyme, marjoram, clove bud, ginger, etc.. are wonderful oils to use in cooking and teas. Citrus oils such as sweet orange, lemon, lime, mandarin, grapefruit and wonderful to use in fruit punches or just to add some flavor to water (use only 1 drop eo per 16oz of water). There are a few floral/herb oils safe for ingestion such as; geranium, melissa, verbena, neroli, peppermint, and spearmint. Peppermint and spearmint are great summer oils. Try mixing a drop of either oil in a scoop of ice cream. The flavor is wonderful. If you need a reliable source for therapeutic grade essential oils visit my website http://www.essentialblend.com I provide a Certificate of Analysis sheet for all of my oils and will also supply MSDS information upon request. Enjoy!! Guest guest
I was able to find out what some of the benifits are in EO but don't know the ones that are safe to use orally like peppermint. [Dave:] Some folks won’t agree with me, but I think it is a good rule of thumb that EOs should NOT be used internally. There are a few exceptions. I’ve made toothpaste with tea tree oil for many years, and although I don’t swallow it, I am using it virtually neat on sensitive surfaces. When I was a bambino, my grandma always put a few drops of peppermint oil in a glass of hot sugar water for a tummy ache. Lately, I’ve even heard of folks actually cooking with EOs, but personally I think this is asking for trouble. ALL botanicals are potential sensitizers! Some are very benign and virtually never cause problems when used correctly, and others are pretty iffy for using neat, or even in soaps in lotions. -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.0/368 - Release 6/16/2006 -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.0/368 - Release 6/16/2006
Guest guest
May I ask who you got your information from on the internal use of essential oils? Some of the below is highly debatable and potentially dangerous. There is an old article covering this on my web site. Guest guest
Please do not go to this site for information. Until Debbie can prove that she has had any training at all, please take this site as unproven and dangerous. 95% of the information on this site is incorrect. Please read her " About us " page and you will see she has no training. If you want to use, please go the American Herbalist Guild and find an herbalist there that has trained and used herbs. Regardless of ANY claims that may be on her site or may not be there, I don't think it is right for you to be so rude publicly about it. You could of had the decency to contact the person you were advising OFF list. I understand that you are only trying to make sure that everyone gets the most accurate, factual information possible, but publicly slandering/libeling(and that's exactly what you just did) isn't going to solve anything. Guest guest
Debbie and newbies, Anyone can come and present their views on newsgroups, but when those views are incorrect, misleading or dangerous then they should not be surprised when those views are challenged. Some newsgroups class this as that stupid word 'flaming'. Everyone being nice to each other is a recipe for allowing cheats and con artists to flourish unopposed. I am an old hand at this and have found that nice peaceful friendly words go in one ear and out the other. To trigger a reaction challenges must be harshly worded, especially when it is from someone making a living selling oils. It is exactly that lack of challenges that has allowed the aromatherapy elite to promote utter nonsense and get away with it. Once a book is published there is little you can do to prove the author is a fraud or is simply making it up as they go along. The internet is a medium to correct that lack of criticism. What annoys me is that people are still setting themselves up as aromatherapy suppliers without having a clue about what they are selling. We still get new people thinking they can make a buck in this trade. This is often at the cost of businesses who have built up a good deal of expertise after many years in the trade. In an expanding market that is fine, but aromatherapy is a contracting market. In aromatherapy there is fact, fiction and a few gray areas. Fiction is I guess around 80% of the claims made for essential oils..reasons in articles on my web site. Safety in particular is far from being a gray area, apart from the " untested " oils of which there are now quiet a few. Skin absorption has been a hot topic for years on various newsgroups and to date no one has come up with firm evidence confirming this is how aromatherapy works. Anyone who reads the article on my web site can see I have been investigating this in the finest detail for years. Certainly, aromatherapy massage can be superb for a wide variety of conditions, but often not for the ones claimed in aromatherapy novels. The other problem with newsgroups is one reason I rarely make mailings any more. They are full of people trying to glean FREE information from those they think are knowledgable. Rather than pay for quality information as per the book list I just sent, these people (including oil suppliers) will just grab what they can for nothing. Unfortunately, what they grab from pseudo experts is often incorrect anyway. This was what prompted me about a year ago to write my article on pregnancy and herbs/oils. I was seeing postings on the subject by people with no training of any kind who were giving out dangerous advice. I don't have a problem with people sharing experiences, formulas, etc. What I have a problem with is when newbies just assume these people know their stuff when clearly they do not. Any business treating people for health related problems should do their utmost to ensure their information is accurate BEFORE they start selling products. If they don't, then they are quacks of the worse kind making money selling products of doubtful merit to the gullible.
