Guest guest
Kathy, It depends on what sort of properties you are going for in an herb tea. Are you looking for flavor? Medicinal value? For the most part, skip the powder for teas. They sink to the bottom of the cup, and form a nasty sludge. You'll want to use the leaves, flowers, roots, barks, and berries in a form known as " cut and sifted " , most likely. If you are using ingredients that grow nearby, you can just use the whole leaf (or whatever other part you would like). You may want to try doing what I did years ago when I first became interested in blending herbal teas. First do lots of reading to identify herbs that you'd like to use. Make a list of the ones that you know grow nearby. For me, that included things like raspberry leaf, chamomile, mints, bee balm, lemon balm, roses, rosehips, lavender, violet flower and leaf, linden flower, elder flower and berry, St. John's wort, catnip, cherry bark, sassafras.... you get the idea. I started harvesting and making simples - a tisane using a single botanical - to find out how they tasted. Then I dried some of each that tasted good, layering them into a large jar as the summer progressed. Eventually, I added some things that I couldn't find on my own. Licorice root comes to mind. Some citrus peel was saved, dried, and added. Over the winter, I enjoyed many cups of tea - each cup tasting different from the last. Or, you can just keep a cup or so of each and play with them, mixing a cup or pot at a time. Enjoy it! You may be very pleasantly surprised to find yourself an expert by spring. This is how we are meant to interact with the plant world, IMO. -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.0/368 - Release 6/16/2006 -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.0/368 - Release 6/16/2006
