Guest guest
It is staggering how everything has just burst into ripeness. Does this always happen? Is it always so sudden? Last year I noted that there was hardly any chamomile growing wild. This year I am seeing it everywhere. There is one very large construction site that I frequently drive through, and it is full of the stuff. The trowel is going in the car today because they just keep covering up more and more of it with asphalt! Another thing I'm seeing is huge stands of elderflower. This must have been a good year for it here because it is all over the place. On the way to and from the shore last week, the blooming mullein and SJW were stunning. The mullein in particular can be so gorgeous if it is growing thickly. Along the Schullkyl Expressway (which I'm certain is spelled wrong) There were all sorts of incredible herbs and plants along the embankments - which is bizarre. The Expressway is a nightmare of bumper to bumper stand-still traffic going through Philadelphia. As a passenger in the car, I happily gazed out at the flora while my companion muttered under his breath. He should learn more about plants - lol. The daylilies are in their prime this week - all stages of the flower can be found from the tiny buds (my favorite) to the larger ones and the open flowers. They are also extremely plentiful around here, and large stands of them seem to be popping up in new places. While picking raspberries the other day, I noticed that the wineberries are heading into their prime as well. Geez!!! Walking along, picking raspberries, munching daylily buds and the occasional berry. Sigh..... Mulberries are out there, along with all the medicinal stuff like jewelweed, plantain, and comfrey. This is sure a busy time for those of us who need to get this stuff put up for later use! OH! And I have my very own Jerusalem Artichoke patch! I raked up the most distant corner of my yard. Then I took about 8 large chokes and cut them into quarters, scattered them into the corner, and covered them slightly with dirt. That's it folks! Nearly all of them are several inches tall now. I'm thrilled.
