Guest guest
I have a few EO combinations that I created for my soap that include Peru Balsam. I have learned that this can be a skin sensitizer. Should I be concerned since this is a rinse off product? What can I use instead (something affordable) in its place to give that subtle vanilla scent? Thanks for you help...Donna
Guest guest
Hope I don't raise too many yawns but please can somebody clarify? Peru Balsam - known sensitiser - now I have read that distilled PB is safe. Is this true? Some posts here scare me to the point of not using eo's at all but I love making soap with gorgeous smelling eo's and I like this one very much. What's a gal supposed to do but ask for help? Guest guest
I use a small percentage of distilled Peru balsam in my soaps. I wrote to Snowdrift Farms about this question and they replied that it was safe. Maybe others feel differently though. Guest guest
Hi Peggy, According to IFRA guidelines - Peru balsam is a " restricted " ingredient. Their recommendation is: " Peru balsam (the exudation from Myroxylon pereirae (Royle) Klotzsch) should not be used as a fragrance ingredient. " **Chris' note - they are speaking of the crude grades here - in those forms it is a powerful sensitizer! ** " Extracts and distillates should not be used such that the total level exceeds 0.4% in consumer products. This is equivalent to 2% in a fragrance compound used at 20% in the consumer product. " **Chris' note - here they are discussing the distilled grades and those with the allergens removed. Even then the usage recommendation level is very low!** Martin Watt notes in his book Plant Aromatics (which EVERYONE on this list should have in their library already that " reports of adverse effects are too numerous to fully list (in Plant Aromatics). Peru balsam is an extremely common cause of cosmetic sensitization .... " From all I've learned about Peru balsam, it would appear that although the distilled and/or " allergens removed " oil itself doesn't initiate the sensitization, enough folks have the problem of being sensitized to certain constituents in Peru balsam already, and it can easily set off major reactions for them! I wouldn't exactly call it a " safe " oil. If I were even going to consider using it in an application that would go onto the skin, I would use it very cautiously and be absolutely sure to keep the level at or below those IFRA recommendations - even in soap. *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Peggy Lowell I use a small percentage of distilled Peru balsam in my soaps. Guest guest
What about in a leave on product such as a cream or lotion? What would be the max usage? I love the smell of it :-) THanks Tracy and Derrick Tappin (AB, Canada) Nature's Natural Solution's (NNS) Fragrance Solutions (FS) NEW!!
