More of us than ever are choosing organic foods. But while it might seem

a healthier option, would you really notice a difference in wellbeing if

you went totally organic?

We challenged a dyed-in-the-wool organic family to swop lifestyles for a

week with a family who love ready-meals. The results make fascinating

reading.

[Dave:] Interesting to say the least. As someone who eats mostly organic (I

work at a natural foods store) I’m not surprised. My wife has fibromyalgia,

and although there is no cure, there’s no question that a better diet helps.

On the other hand, organic is expensive. I get a discount of 20% on my

purchases, and it still costs a lot. The demand for organic food is such

that American suppliers can’t keep up, so much of the food is imported. We

really try to buy local produce when possible. A conventionally-grown

hothouse tomato from Von’s is nearly $2. An organic one from Argentina is

not much more, but is it better for the planet when you consider the jet

fuel used to bring it here?

Since it’s been so hot here, I make smoothies a lot. My wife prefers fruit,

but for myself, I throw veggies in the juicer – a beet, some kale, a turnip,

spinach, carrots, maybe an apple to sweeten it, all organic. I take a

pitcher of this to work for about 3 days’ worth of lunches. I’ve lost 15

pounds in the last month eating this way, and it gives me a great energy

level.
