Guest guest
Aromatherapy, herbs, natural living, etcDoes anyone know why Olive oil has had about 4 price increases this year? It sure makes it hard to keep soap prices reasonable when it jumps like this. Over the weekend I went to purchase a 5 liter bottle and it jumped about 8 cents per oz again. Guest guest
It's a commodity and so if there is a drought, or flood or something.. We get to pay the price. Also with all the schiesters out there that are mixing stuff may have something to do with it as well. I know that several places here on this side of the world (North of Houston,TX) Have ran out of the 5 liter bottles... Yeah it bites big time... I know some people who are working on trying to get something better in the way of prices by buying drums... Guest guest
Below is one contributing factor .... *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spain records high olive oil prices http://tinyurl.com/or5ef 9/3/2006 - Olive oil prices in Spain rose by 6.8 per cent between January and February 2006 and increased by 37.2 per cent during the last 12 months, as a result of the shortfall in the country's production. El Pais reports that the Spanish ministry of industry, tourism and commerce confirmed olive oil as the packaged food product to register the highest year-on-year price increase in the country, followed by frozen prawns. The ministry announced earlier that the 2005 olive oil crop is down by about 35 per cent, or 350,000 tons, after little rain and severe cold spells and snow hurt Spain's olive trees last winter. Spain is the world's biggest olive oil producer, accounting for a third of global supply. Guest guest
Hi All, The marketplace is not only affected by crop conditions, but also by the shrinking dollar. Our money here in the U.S. is worth less these days in the world market and we are in an inflationary period overall. As more countries/industries move to the Euro, it leaves the dollar in a very poor position. I'm afraid that everything is going to be more scarce and cost more in the future. There is no avoiding it. Bit by bit, you will see all of us have to raise prices because of our increasing costs. Shipping alone is getting to be a lot larger burden. Never something we want to do, but necessary. As an example, rose oil from the producers has risen approximately 235% since I first started importing from Bulgaria in the mid 90's. Other raw materials aren't quite so drastic, but even domestic cert. organic grapefruit oil is more than 3 1/2 times what it was just last year. The real killer, above and beyond the basic increases in the cost of commodities is both the exchange rate and the cost of gasoline. We just ordered another shipment of the PET bail jars. The PRICE has stayed the same over three years. Our COST has increased 15% each year because of transportation charges escalating. Yesterday I did a funds transfer to a Canadian distiller. The Canadian dollar used to be worth 75 cents. Yesterday the transfer rate was 95 cents... adding 20% to what I paid, even tho the suppliers price remained constant. And I don't know about anyone else's VISA cards...but ours are now charging an additional 3% for an " international transaction " ... (The grapefruit increase is, I believe, because of the damage from the hurricanes over the past two years....more than the loss of one year's crop, the orchards and the fields they grow in received lasting damage.)
