Hi Everyone,

Could you please tell me how much Rose Otto (in grms) I would need to

scent a 1kg batch of Cold Process soap. A nice medium to strong scent

would be required.

TIA

Hi Dawn,

That is going to be some mighty pricey soap, considering that when you

soap, even using the more pungent oils, it take at least 1/3 of an oz

per lb to scent it well (and considering a kilo is 2.2 lbs, that a LOT

of Rose Otto).

Unless you don't have any budget concerns, in which case you can use all

the Rose Otto you want, I offer the following suggestions to help you

still get a nice real rose soap without AS high a materials cost.

Instead of making a CP soap, make it a HP process soap that you add the

scent to AFTER the cooking process is complete and right before you mold

it. This helps keep the scent intact better as the lye and oils have

fully saponified into soap and the lye itself is no longer there to

" eat " up your scent.

Another idea similar to HP is to make the soap base first, unscented,

for rebatching. In that case you can use Rose Hydrosol as your

rebatching liquid which will help give the scent a rosy scent boost in a

addition to the Rose Otto that is added right before molding.

Other techniques to consider are using some Rose Floral Wax in addition

to Rose Otto, or making a scent blend that is a majority of Rose Otto

but with other rosy notes (such as Rose Geranium) to help extend your

Rose Otto, but still make a wonderful True Rose Otto soap.

Good luck and please do let us now how it turns out! {grinz}

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for your suggestions. The Soap is for a 'one off' special

occasion. I do not make Rose soap commercially due to the cost

factor! I generally make CP and as I have never used Rose Otto before

I was wondering about the quantity needed as I know that EO's are

restricted in usage. (UK assessors are very strict on EO percentages

and if I was to make this soap commercially I would do my research via

IFRA and my certifying chemist etc.). The reason I am asking on this

group is to first guage the amount needed (I know you are all Rose

Otto fans here).

What a great idea to HP it...I will do it that way.

Thanks again Chris, I appreciate you taking time out of your busy day

to give me advice.
