Guest guest
Okay, it's just one. Or maybe not. We'll see when I get to the end how many things I had to say. Last week I started reading the ads that are sent through the list. At first I was checking out ads that piqued my curiosity, not that I can buy anything now being stone broke, but I wanted to see any way. After the first three or four, I started reading with a purpose. That purpose being, Some of the ads that were sent through I had NO IDEA what was being sold. Yes I'm a member of the list. Sometimes I even follow the threads. However that doesn't mean I have any idea of what your product is. I know I've been guilty of this myself. Written ads with the expectation of everyone knowing what the heck I'm talking about. Keep forgetting that there are always new folks on this list, people who don't read my posts because they ain't interesting, or they're busy etc. When you write your ad, make sure in the very first sentence, from the very get go, you mention EXACTLY what it is you are selling. Making people hunt for it is a sure turn off. Also describe completely and as accurately as you can, including, color, fragrance, size, organic or not etc.. Be creative, but be completely clear WHAT it is you are trying to get peoples attention focused on. Remember too, there are over a thousand folk on this list. Some sell similar items. So have fun with it, make it different but be Very clear. Pretend you're writing for a 4th grader with ADD and you'll prolly come close to hitting a home run. Oh! Don't forget a catchy title. " AD " doesn't really cut it. Neither does " For Sale " . You want something that attracts a readers eye. That's it for now. Hope this helps a little and this week when I see your ads, I hope to know right away what you want me to spend my non-existant money on. ;-) K -- Cheers! [Dave:] You have spoken my mind, Kathleen! I hate to say it but at least 80% of these ads lose me within the first 2 or three sentences. I’ve thought about this. These people are in business like I am, they have a great product that they’re proud of, and most of them, like me, are operating on a shoestring out of their home or a small shop. I know I am a whole lot better at making soaps that people think are phenomenal, than I am at setting up and running a business that would bring those soaps to the world. I do have some experience, though. Before the Internet, we had direct mail. Direct mailers made a science out of making every word count – because they had to pay postage on each piece! And they knew beforehand that 98% of the stuff they sent out would go directly into the trash, so they really made the other 2% count! A lot of the same principles that worked for direct mail apply to the Internet, too. You have a couple of seconds to grab your potential customer’s attention, and in that interval you have to let him know what your product or service is and open the door to establishing his need for it. Many people never look beyond the subject line – you have to provide a reason, blam! for him not to hit the delete key. Personally I think there are better ways to make money. But if I was selling a product that folks on these lists might need, I’d advertise here, too. Just my 2¢ worth. -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.10.10/419 - Release 8/15/2006 -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.10.10/419 - Release 8/15/2006
Guest guest
I thought that on this list you're _supposed_ to put " AD " or " COMM " in the subject so readers know that it's an ad or commercial in case they want to filter those emails out (or zoom in on them). We agreed to do that so people aren't surprised by the sales pitches, isn't that right? Karen At 5:43 PM -0700 8/15/06, Woobey Queen wrote: Okay, it's just one. Or maybe not.
