Guest guest
Hi there: Just wanted to make comments on Jewell Weed and extracts. Most notes say to use Witch Hazel due to Euwell? Gibbons problems due to an alcohol extract molding. Well, I think I might have solved why his extract molded. There are connecters every few inches in the stem of the jw. At those junctions, the flesh is a dark brown and different than the regular flesh. Each junction connector has the capability of being rooted in the future. My ole timers is in full gear this morning and I can't think of the botany name for this so I'm using junction connector. <grin> Anyway, to get to the solution of avoiding problems with an extract, I avoid using that brown material altogether by cutting around each one. Also, sliced each and every stem in half to access the flesh and to doubly make sure I was avoiding all brown material. Made both Witch Hazel extract and alcohol last year, and they both lasted the whole year. The ointment I made, was refrigerated and lasted the whole year too. Did not make any oils to keep on hand, made it all into ointment instead. Notes: Jewell Weed done this way is more time consuming, but it seems to work extremely well. Do have a bit of extract left over if anyone is interested, but I did not label which is alcohol or witch hazel due to large show we did this past week-end and was rushed for time. All is bottled in 4 oz glass sprayer bottles. There might even be a few jars of ointment left over. Unfortunately, the county mowers came up our road and mowed where they normally don't....and mowed most of my JWeed for this year. ((((((( Was waiting until the blossoms were in peak to cut it. Will have short supply this year unless I can find a big amount growing elsewhere. My recommendations to all that need the jewell weed is a whole regimen from all I've gleaned in the past. If you know that you've been exposed: Take off clothes and wash those immediately or the oils will stay on the clothes. Right away, wipe areas with alcohol, we always use vodka, then wash with soap and water. Shower soon, then spray with jewell weed extract, let dry and then add the ointment. Add fresh spray extract and ointment as needed thruout the day. This clears up the worst cases of poison ivy, oak and sumac in short time. It cleared up a severe case of Poison Oak Poisoning with one of our Master Gardeners last year in less than 5 days. Oh, and be careful harvesting the JW, it tends to grow nearby poison ivy, oak, etc. A most fragrant day to ya, deb
