Laundry Soap & Dishwasher Soap

Ok, I've been making soap long enough that one would think I know the

answer to the below questions, but I don't, and I'm not too proud to ask

*lol*

I know some of y'all make your own laundry soap. I make so much soap but

never have made laundry soap. One I heard that real soap (as opposed to

detergent) leaves a film on clothes over time, especially the synthetic

fibers (which I could see being a marketing lie put out by the detergent

purveyors ;).

Also I have an HE washer that needs low sudsing detergent, so I wonder

if I put soap in that machine will my laundry room be like that episode

of the Brady Bunch when Bobby tried to wash his own clothes and ended up

sudsing up the whole first floor *lol*

Also, anyone make their own dishwasher machine soap?

1/4 cup white vinegar in the rinse prevents any film/soap away and is a fabric

softener. I use a Downy Ball for this.

Home made laundry soap is very low sudsing. I have 3 sisters-in law with a HE

washing machine and my laundry powder is all they will use and 1/4 cup is enough

for a large load. I use 1/2 cup when washing DH's greasy clothes.

Dishwaher 'soap' is much easier to make than laundry powder - equal amounts of

borax, baking soda, and citric acid. Use 2 Tablespoons per load

Hey Chris.. I did a couple of times, and um you have to be vewy vewy

careful.. Depending on what type of water you have. If you have soft water

.. The soap suds just like the Brady bunch.. Ask me how I know...LOL.. And I

actually used less than what I do with detergent. There was some curd left

on some of the clothes, I haven't gotten it down to a science yet as to what

I need to do to make it better, because well.. I've been Hopping busy, But

I just used some of the liquid soap I make and put in about 1/4 cup per load

and let it go. I know Nikie grates her left overs with a salad shooter in

to the laundry. The one time I used too much soap.. It was the Brady bunch

episode and my hubby is the one who does the laundry.. LOL usually..

We make our own laundry and dishwasher soaps, but not from scratch. For

laundry detergent, we grate one bar of Fels Naptha (I then whirl it in the

blender for a finer powder), and add 1 cup of Twenty Mule Team Borax and 1

cup of washing soda or sodium carbonate. This mixture is dirt-cheap, and as

little as one tablespoonful does a fine job on all our loads. For

dishwasher detergent, just leave out the soap. We have hard water, and

there is some scum left behind. So we use a cup of white vinegar in the

rinse. This works perfectly both with the laundry and the dishwasher.

Hi all I got this reciepe off of another forum so it is not my reciepe. I was

looking for the name of the lady that put it on there but couldn't find it.

This is what she gave us, the amount of shavings that would amount to 4or five

bars of soap If you have boys then 5 or six bars of soap. I have made this

dry or liquid. I prefer the liguid. Put the shavings in pan and cover with

water and melt.

Fill 5 gal bucket with warm water about 2/3 full add to this 2 cups of 20 mule

team borac,2 cups laundry soda, get mine at either homeland or united grocery,2

cups clorox color safe bleach. stir well to get all of this powder blended

Long wooden spoon is what I use.

Then pour the melted soap into the water mixture and stir away. I even use my

stick blender for the top and continue to stir alternatle with the spoon untill

I get it all mixed up. don't submerge the stick blender tho. tehe, I use a

half cup to a regular size load Then I use the liguid fabric softner ball and

put White vinegar in it for my rinse. If my whites are a little dingy I just

let them soak for a little while and then turn back on and let it wash. I find

sometimes the gel is a little heavy and I will have to stir it and get it mixed

up again. This doesn't have much if any suds. I know you can by Product to

make suds but this works fine in all washers. Hope this helps. Ida

Have been to every grocery store within 50 miles and

no one carries Fels Naptha. Any ideas - is there a place on the net where

I can purchase this??

Hi,

You can find the soap at this address:

www.oldfashionedfamilies.com/content/view/63/17

If that doesn't get you there, just type in

www.oldfashionedfamilies.com if there is a Kroger

store around they carry it in the laundry section

usually on the top shelf.

why not make your own 100% lard soap and use that ? That's what I use for my

laundry soap and not because I can't find it - there are at least 15 grocery

stores within 20 miles of me and DH works at a grocery store. Dish washing is

the only detergent I will buy since I started making soap.

Hi Sandi,

You can place an order with them, they would or should

order it for you. I worked in a natural grocery and we

took special orders all the time.

If you can't get it let me know, and I'll send it for

you. I've been using this laundry soap and I frankly

can't tell that it's that great. My whites aren't

whiter and it seems to take some of the color out of

colored clothes. It is less expensive though. I made

and use the dry not the liquid that might be one

reason, though I can't see why it would matter.

Hope you are well.

Blessings,

Lynn
