Guest guest
I've been googling for gov guidelines or regulations on what one has to put on labels - especially at this point on essential oils - what are the legal requirements for labeling oils that are sold to the public? I've not found anything that really speaks to this (except one site for Canada) and was wondering if anyone had a site bookmarked or could help me in this area? thanks Pam TLC Naturally http://www.tlc-naturally.com
Guest guest
Hi Pam, This is the information we put on our undiluted essential oil labels. Common name, botanical name, cultivation practice, method of extraction, plant part extracted, country of origin and " Warning: For topical use only. Do not take internally. Use diluted and only with reliable instruction. Keep away from flame. Keep out of reach of children. " We also include company name, city, web address and a lot-specific batch. Our labels are FDA approved. Toxic essential oils like Birch and Wintergreen require a tamper-proof cap. Be Well, Marcia Elston http://www.wingedseed.com " Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot. Guest guest
Thank you so much Marcia for the info - I appreciate it. Was wondering if there are any FDA or any gov regulations on selling eo's and how I can find the info? I'm interested in finding out too - how some companies can put on their labels that you CAN take them internally - wouldn't that open one up to a lawsuit?? Pam 10. Re: Labeling Instructions? Guest guest
Hi Again, Pam, Some companies in the U.S. have received FDA approval for internal use of specific dosages of essential oils as over-the-counter nutritional supplements, usually sold encapsulated. These are oils such as oregano that have been tested in vivo with proven antimicrobial affects, and they have pretty much been standardized to get approval and the right to sell them as medicinals. Obviously a costly process that most small aromatherapy companies don't want to incur; I think you'll find most here steer clear of selling specifically for internal use directly to the consumer. Not to mention that this would also drastically change your insurance needs. Our company sells essential oils to doctors and medical professionals who can prescribe internal use, but we prefer to distance ourselves from recommending that in our literature or on our labels directly to an end user. In layperson classes (and all literature), we emphasize topical/inhalation use and refer people to health providers that we know can be helpful if they are interested in internal use. In professional classes, education is aimed at the massage professional or those who work in a clinical setting where they are licensed to diagnose and prescribe, so we provide more expanded educational information. We leave the internal use education to medical doctors, however. Essential oils are used in myriad applications, food, cosmetics, as well as in some pharmaceutical drugs. The oils, themselves, are not regulated or designated pharmaceuticals at this time, however, there is a line not to be crossed when it comes to 'recommending' a medical application if you are not a doctor or licensed health care practitioner. This could easily be construed as practicing medicine without a license and is something to be avoided. Clearly the preferred use in aromatherapy is topical and inhalation. The FDA are generally helpful folks who can steer you in the right direction and answer some of your questions. You can call any regional office, or even WA DC. Have you perused their website yet? http://www.fda.gov/ Hope this is helpful. Be Well, Marcia Elston http://www.wingedseed.com " Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot.
