Guest guest
Hi Folks, I'm once again trying to figure out how to get control over these weeds. This part of TX is a jungle swamp, so its not surprising that stuff grows wild here! I've let the garden get overgrown and heat exhausted cause I've been wimpy and hiding inside from the heat and humidity *lol* Finally today it is gorgeous - cooler, low humidity, so I went and took a really good look out there and its a jungle of weeds. Everyone around here (neighbors, etc ..) of course says " RoundUp " . Well of course I don't want to use that, but I also would like to try to do something to control the never ending weed invasion. It seems that even putting down paper and mulch, and black fabric and mulch doesn't seem to bother the weeds that just grow on top of it all. It makes them easier to pull up, but still .. there must be a better way *lol* So, what are your organic weed solutions? Has anyone tried the organic weed and feed stuff from Garden's Alive? *Smile* Chris (list mom - still acclimating to the growing conditions here http://www.alittleolfactory.com
Guest guest
Chris, Did you know that stuff that they call Dollar weed is Gotu Kola. An Americanized version of it... One man's weed is another man's money. Now... What to do with all those dollar weeds? How about a tea? How about

Guest guest
Good old fashioned elbow grease. Pull them! Once you've done that lay a thick layer of mulch down and you should be okay. Your neighbors that recommended Roundup are idiots. Roundup kills everything, not just weeds. Unless you want to kill your plants and contaminate the soil to make it very hard for anything to grow there, avoid it.. Lotsa folks don’t realize that Texas is the size of France, and there are both beautiful areas and places that come from your worst nightmare. Floresville, I know just where that is. It’s an old town, originally called Lodi. County seat of Wilson County. I remember a story of a lynching of some guy named Martinez I think, who took an axe and chopped up his girlfriend because she wouldn’t run away with him, back around the turn of the 20th century. Like many Texas towns, it has a grand old courthouse. -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.11.7/434 - Release 8/30/2006 -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.11.7/434 - Release 8/30/2006
Guest guest
Chris: There is a great product made with vinegar and clove oil. I think it is called " Burn Out " . A friend uses it and swears by it. Hope this helps. I have some to try around my lavender plants, but until they are all harvested, I am afraid of using anything except the " Hoe " ............ugh. Hope this helps. Cindy Whitaker www.windmillsoaps.com Beautifully Designed & Gentle

Cindy Whitaker www.windmillsoaps.com Beautifully Designed & Gentle Using vinegar (white is the least expensive) to kill pesty weeds is great . .. . However, it will kill any plant it comes in contact with. So be careful using it around plants you don't want to kill, especially with clove oil. We've just gotten through the first of our biannual battle with blackberries. We don't spray them, we machette/dig up roots. Very intensive, but the only way to really keep them at bay without having to put too much vinegar in the environment. I will occasionally use the vinegar, but try not to. Guest guest
Hi Chris, Jerry Baker, master gardner & publisher of many books on natural remedies, has the following recipe for weeds (is this OK?) 1 tbsp gin 1 tbsp vinegar 1 tbsp liquid dish soap 1 qt very warm water mix, put in hand held sprayer, drench to point of run off, don't spray nearby plants. There are many variations of his recipes everywhere and they work! Hugs, Buffy > I'm once again trying to figure out how to get control over these weeds. Guest guest
Re vanilla beans, I always make vanilla sugar by placing vanilla beans, about 1 per quart (I use a quart jar). I have vanilla beans that I have been reusing for over 10 years and they still strongly sent the sugar. I suspect if you tried this with brown sugar you would get the scent in the sugar and could proceed from there. It would also taste good! lol Carol
