Guest guest
Thanks to Cindy, Starr, Kahfess, John, J for all your suggestions. I will definitely try the candy idea and the peppermint EO. I have nothing against mice, per se. I raised pet mice when I was a child and found them to be sweet, adorable creatures. However, I'm afraid of wild mice running around my house as they may harbor hantavirus, plus it's a tremendous nuisance to clean up after them, and there's always the worry that they will destroy wiring and cables and furniture and such. So, they have to go. They belong outside. I don't like to kill them. It goes against my nature, it goes against all the effort I put into rescuing animals, it offends my Vegan son. I will be ecstatic if peppermint will drive them away. And peppermint smells so much better than those nasty glue traps which are impregnated with a blend of peanut butter and mouse urine odors (an abhorrent combination, surely, to anyone but a mouse? Even to them, possibly, as I have yet to catch any). When my husband comes home from his business trip I'd much prefer him to walk into a minty-fresh home than the one I'm currently enduring! Thank you all again, and wish me luck ) jaime,CA

This is a tip to file away if it works! I don’t like to kill them either, but lest you are tempted to go the trap-and-release route, you should know that mice are very territorial, and will come right back if you simply carry them outside and let them go. They will travel up to a mile to their home territory. -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.5/451 - Release 9/19/2006 -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.6/453 - Release 9/20/2006
Guest guest
I'll test the mint too It is coming Springtime here in Brasil (happy Spring/Autumn for you) and rats and mice are going to look for places to make nests. I'm going to impregnate my house with mint. We loved the idea. I hate to kill these bichos with a trap and poison them is so horrid, and I hate the idea of having them around. Thanks a lot and let us try. Ane* Acesso Grátis - Internet rápida e grátis. Instale o discador agora!
Guest guest
Thanks, Dave. I will let you know how the peppermint works. So far, things are looking up. I put my kitchen in " mint condition " yesterday. There was no evidence of mice in the pantry or elsewhere in the kitchen when I got up this morning. So far, so good. I also have them in the yard. It's a huge yard, naturalistic in style, in a semi-rural environment. IOW, it's mouse heaven with open fields nearby, lots of wild grasses and hiding places...we've seldom had rodent problems inside and even then they were taken care of fairly easily. Mostly, we and they have coexisted peacefully for 14 years. However, there is a great deal of new home construction going on in the vicinity and that is stirring up the rodent populations. (It's stirring up the human populations, too, but that's another story). It's going to be very hard keeping the mice away from the house when they're being chased out of their natural burrows across the way. To make matters worse, I now have rats in the garage ( jaime,CA

Drives my pristine neighbors crazy, because I have Dandelions in the spring, (My daughter thinks, as do I, that they make a great necklace). Regarding mice....Get A Cat. Now your working on a primal level, but heh, Toulouse, our cat, has been fighting the good fight for us for 10 years. I have also conditioned him to do only mice, and moles. We have tons of birds, Toulouse knows if he goes after one of those ther will be no treats. He also leaves the chipmunks alone because well one of them could be a relative of Chip or Dale's, and we can't have that. For the moles, I do use hair from our brushes soaked in Beer, works for me. On particularly bad years I go to my friends at Gardens Alive, an all organic gardeners helper. I use alot of their products, and have been happy with them. they to recommend natural predators for infestations of all kinds. they have a web site. Hope it's ok to post Gardensalive.com or google them Here's to the weekend, Lynn
Guest guest
Regarding mice....Get A Cat. [Dave:] Can’t beat ‘em. There may be valid reasons for not having one, but if you can, there is no better solution on God’s earth to the mouse problem. It’s organic, too. -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.8/455 - Release 9/22/2006 -- Version: 7.1.405 / Virus Database: 268.12.8/455 - Release 9/22/2006
Guest guest
Yeah, but then ya gotta feed them, or spay or neuter them otherwise ya may contribute to the overpopulation of other little kitties!! We had a rat in our tack room and had tried rat traps as well. I suggested the cat as well, but then realized it was probably more costly in the long run! But, then my DH saw him in there one day and found another way on how to dispose of the rat! No more rat!! I heard on another list that lavender was a good deterrent. But when the lavender scent went away the varmints came back. Guest guest
our cats are going on 9 years old and we have never bought cat food only put food out for them in the mornings - a hungry cat will catch mice but a cat who knows he has a full food bowl will rarely catch a mouse. We live out in the country, last house on a dead end dirt road in an old farm house (nearly 200 years old) surrounded by fields and every fall when the crops are harvested, the mice are left homeless and move in with us. Our cats spend equal amount of time inside and outside and if there isn't a mouse/love offering outside the door most mornings, look where you step because if there isn't one outside, there will be at least 1 inside - usually on the floor in front of the coffee maker. Guess they know us well - we may not notice a dead mouse laying in front of the back door or the basement door but we sure notice them in front of the coffee maker ! DH now knows to turn on the kitchen light before venturing into the room after finding a love offering with his bare feet. We get half of their catch - they'll eat 1 and bring us another 1. Once we ooh and aah and tell the cats what good boys they are and fuss over them a bit, they carry off the offering and eat it. The soy beans out here are about ready to harvested so the number of our love offerings should increase to at least 2 a day for a month or 2, and then increase again after the first big snow fall Paula .......... in Michigan I used to have super powers but my therapist took them away Yeah, but then ya gotta feed them, or spay or neuter them ............... Your right animals are expensive, but for me, they are so much more than varmint catchers, soothe me soothe my kids in times of stress. Unconditional love is a wonderful thing! Worth every penny,( OK not at 4:20 in the morning when they got to go out) and yes they got to be spayed or neutered! All my pets are rescued boys and girls, well right now they're all boys. Speaking of health care costs, whew a visit to the vet for shots is killer, but you can go to, (hurts to say it) big chains like Pets Mart, Petco, and get shots, and flea worm preventative at about 1/3 the cost of a vet.
