Guest guest
Hey y'all, This post is really for the new folks .. those who are just now getting their feet wet in what can be a refreshing pool .. or a cesspool. Which it is will depend on the amount of credible information you get on the subject above. Whether you want to be only a user of EO or you have plans to be a seller of EO .. or an Aromatherapy Practitioner .. you will need to get the facts and the facts are not always easy to separate from the Bovine Excrement. There are many unsafe users of EO who have been lucky .. to date .. and there are many honest .. but misinformed .. sellers of EO. Likewise, there are many dishonest sellers of EO. As I said in an earlier post .. the main theme of the Oils & Herbs News Group is SAFETY. And happy I am that this holds true for many essential oils dealers .. especially those on this list .. Chris, Marge, Marcia, John, Graham and others that you see writing here often .. and to many others who do not sell EO .. like Kathleen, etc. The two biggest problems I see in the totally unregulated industry of Aromatherapy and sale of Essential Oils .. in the USA .. are wild butt claims for Unsafe Use of Essential Oils .. and the sale of Adulterated Essential Oils. The Big Brother European Union has clamped down on the Unsafe part of this problem .. and the UK has, in fact, put a couple of slick sellers in the Poky for selling Adulterated Essential Oils. Here in the USA .. we have the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) putting out Warning Letters to this and that seller from time to time .. but its about claims for healing .. not safe or unsafe use of the EO .. which is a bigger problem than even they can get a handle on. Its up to the folks in this industry to police themselves .. and others. There are a lotta folks out and about who do this .. and their efforts on the grand scale are about as effective as shooting at mosquitos with a BB gun. I don't expect this to change much because the many slick marketers .. mainly Multi Level Marketing Companies .. are going to stay one step ahead of the honest folks. It is the News Groups like this one .. and Anya's Natural Perfumery .. at NaturalPerfumery .. and Stacey's Aromatherapy For Everyone (ATFE) at ATFE .. that do much to keep the focus on Safe Use Of Essential Oils .. and Education in this area. There might be some other News Groups around that focus on these important areas .. but I've not found them yet. True it is that there are members of many News Groups that are honest and knowledgeable .. but in many cases, they are overwhelmed by the misinformed members .. and even worse, by those who wish to misinform for the purpose of marketing their products. Those of us who have been around the business a while don't plan to be around forever. This is not (to me) a calling .. it is something I enjoy but even for things we enjoy there will be a time when we have to let go. I enjoyed 30 years in the Army and still miss that life .. but it was time to let go and move on. I will miss the Essential Oils business when I let go .. probably around Summer 2008 .. but I will let go because I have a more important mission now .. that of educating my son in areas he will not likely get sufficient information in school. But when I .. and when/if Martin Watt and Marge and Marcia .. decide to hang it up for good .. we would like to feel comfortable in knowing that we have done our best to do our best to educate folks in the proper safe use of EO. And I think we will be able to feel comfortable because there are a lotta younger folks .. like List Mom Chris .. and others who have already begun to take on this damn near impossible mission. The future of our right to make informed decisions about our own health depends to a great degree on the education we gain through credible AT courses .. like Martin Watt's outstanding course .. which I am no longer a sales rep for .. http://www.aromamedical.com/coursedetails.html .. and on News Groups like this one and those previously mentioned. Keep in mind that the information received on these News Groups is not being presented by a group of folks who feel that their mission in life is to educate you .. its presented by a group of folks who want to sell their products but at the same time .. believe that it is in their best interests and your best interests that you get the facts and become informed .. and safe .. consumers. So .. learn and keep learning and even though you will find many claims on many sites that will excite you .. keep in mind that the majority of those who make those fantastic claims are ONLY after your money and they have absolutely no concern about your health or safety .. or the future of our right to use Aromatherapy and purchase Essential Oils. I would like to refer the new folks to a lotta good information on Martin Watt's site .. http://www.aromamedical.com/ .. and particularly to those articles listed under the " Articles Archive " . And this one http://www.aromamedical.com/education.html When I am gone from this rat race .. and teaching my son which color of plastic worm to use based on the barometric pressure, color and depth of the water, position of the sun .. and such .. I will still be using Essential Oils for the health maintenance of my family .. those of you who are still heavy into this field will do well to continue to get as much credible education as you can .. so as to avoid endangering yourself and those you love .. and those to whom you sell products. Y'all have a good one .. and keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
Guest guest
Thanks for pushing the links for my information resources Butch. Like you I am also preparing for the day I exit this trade. I have already transferred the administration of the business activities of my web site to my Son. Hopefully that move will ensure most of my work will still be available even without me being around. In addition, I have registered www.aromamedical.org That new site will become my none commercial web site carrying only information articles and hopefully some from other honest people involved in the trade. Yes I know it's hard to believe, but there are a handful of honest people in this otherwise corrupt trade! I have said it before many times on this group, but for the benefit of newcomers I am going to repeat myself. Please please please never rely on commercial web sites for accurate information on health issues. Their job is to sell products and that is fine, but they will spin you all kinds of crap to do that. In the USA you need to beware of aromatherapy suppliers who make medicinal claims. These are illegal over there but the FDA is only starting to tackle a few. Beware particularly of claims being made that essential oils can cure TB, diabetis, cancer, whooping cough, liver disease, gall bladder disease, etc. etc. That is ALL hogwash and deliberate lies designed to hoodwink a gullible public. On the better web sites you may find mild medicinal claims, but not the sort of trash mentioned above. If you think you can set up a business supplying aromtherapy products, my advice is forget it. The trade is crammed to bursting with know nothing small aromatherapy suppliers but with fancy convincing web sites. Many of those newer sites are taking customers from long established and knowledgable suppliers. Be careful about going to the sites that Google dump on you if you use their search service. Some of these sites are the biggest con artists in the trade. They pay Google to list them but several are illegal. In the UK right now there are two sites who use Google links system and they are making illegal and very dangerous claims. That kind of thing indicates a business that are new to the trade as all the respectable UK suppliers have stuck to the law for many years. Better leave it at that for now, but don't forget the groups archives where you will find a lot more good advice.
