Guest guest
Hi Kimberly, Glad you asked the below question .. and I'll address it as far as photo sensitization (photo toxicity) is concerned .. but in addition to that potential problem .. one must also keep in mind the other potential problems of blends .. irritation and sensitization .. and to some degree, toxicity in general. This is a very dynamic list .. as one of the List Mama's " elves " who assists in monitoring the list .. I get at least half a dozen notices each day indicating new members have signed on. So following this post I will send a few more that I hope will enlighten the new folks. The MAIN theme on Oils & Herbs is SAFE use of Essential Oils! > Hello everyone... > > I'm interested in preparing massage/moisturizing oil/lotion > blends including bergamot eo but concerned about the potential > phototoxic issues. Concerned you should be .. especially with use of expressed Bergamot .. unless its FCF Bergamot .. where the bergaptene (a furanocourmarin compound) has been extracted. A few photos of the danger from Martin Watt's site http://www.aromamedical.com/special.htm > I'm also interested in using other citrus oils--mandarin, sweet > orange, lemon, for instance. Each oil will have its own proven safe dilution .. go on any News Group on the net and you'll get answers to your questions on dilution .. but these answers will vary. That alone should be enough to alert us to the fact that a lotta folks are operating on pure luck. > Is it true that if I dilute the oils enough I shouldn't have a problem > and if so--what exactly constitutes a safe dilution--ie how many drops > of these eos can I use in each ounce of carrier oil without worrying > about going out in the sun? First .. lemme tell you that when you ask about " drops " you are going to get a lot of incorrect replies to your question .. on the Net we can find conversations that are as much as 100% different .. and the reason for this is because each oil has a different density and most droppers have a different size hole in them. Its better to calculate percentages and then work that out with the particular sizes of droppers you want to use .. and stay within those safe percentage levels. Its true that if you dilute oils sufficiently you'll greatly reduce the possibility of photo sensitization .. and irritation and sensitization. Its not true that you can have the confidence that the blends you make will not cause problems when someone is exposed to direct or indirect sunlight .. or when they use a product frequently .. because different folks have different skin types/conditions .. and some folks have been set up for sensitization already .. its an ax swinging over their head. What exactly constitutes a safe dilution? Depends on the EO used. There is a credible reference source for this information .. a reference pub that I would bet 75% or better of the folks who blend EO .. on this or any other list .. have as a desk side reference. Without this reference publication, one is using Kentucky Windage .. or shooting in the dark. If you would like to review THE Safety Manual on scientifically proven safe dilution for dermal application, Martin Watt's Plant Aromatics, the URL is below. The old edition was $75 .. I published the new, revised edition and offer it for $44.90 .. it can now be seen and ordered at URL http://www.av-at.com/plantaromaticsavnp.html The revised edition came out in November 2001 and is now in the Fifth Printing. Plant Aromatics provides referenced scientific test results for dermal application of many, many EO. It states when and who conducted the test and provides the results. The information contained in Plant Aromatics is that which is used by the cosmetics industry. I am now exclusive dealer for North and South America. Martin Watt deals the rest of the world .. http://www.aromamedical.com/paper.html This is not Advertisement Day .. but since there are only two sources in the world for this safety manual .. List owners have traditionally seen this as more of a public service announcement than an advertisement. When my present supply of Plant Aromatics manuals is exhausted .. which will not be long from now .. only Martin will offer them. Reason .. its a very low profit margin item for me .. but very costly to pay for the printing of a minimum of 250 copies each time and then have that fairly large investment sit on the shelf for a year. Since beginning sales in 2001 .. we've sold over 1,000 copies .. so the folks who I can reach out to in this industry are already in possession of a copy. I'll use this a springboard to answer questions I'm asked daily. Why did I stop offering Herbal Teas & Spices/Herbs and why am I phasing out the 100% Cotton Turkish Robes? Because .. our business has grown larger than is the capability of finding additional, trustworthy and efficient labor in the small town we operate in (Friendsville, MD. pop 597). My employees have to lean forward in the saddle and keep their noses to the grindstone just to deal with the orders for EO/Hydrosols/Carriers, etc., we receive from 50 US states and 87 other countries .. and considering their hourly wage, the profit gained after packaging and shipment of some items is less than cost of the labor .. so I dropped many items. > I appreciate your advice, > Kimberly > Oakland, CA Welcome you are .. good luck .. have a nice day. And y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
