Come-Ons POSTED: 9:43 am EST November 3, 2006 NEW YORK -- Mount Sinai's School of Medicine will use a $400,000 grant to remind doctors to question sales pitches by drug representatives when deciding which medicine to give patients. The drug industry spends billions a year on ads and sales pitches to doctors. And Dr. Ethan Halm, an associate professor at Mount Sinai, said doctors need better skills to navigate drug rep's sales meetings. They can be seductive affairs in which doctors are treated to free meals and showered with information about a drug's benefits. But a group that represents the country's top pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies -- The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America -- said the drug companies have the most information about the medicines they research and develop.
