Hi all. I'm Carrie. I live in western Kentucky and I'm just getting

into (maybe) the soap making hobby.

I'm thinking of maybe making soaps for my friends for Christmas. I'm

so fed up with the commercilization of Christmas! I want to do

something really special for my friends this year. So I'm hoping to

give them all handmade (by me!!) gifts.

So . . . are there any good books for websites out there with simple

beginners instructions for soap making? Is it possible to buy

ingrediants in small quantities, say enough for 10 4-oz bars?

TIA!!

All the info you need. Yes, you can get oils in small quantities, you

can even pick them up at a grocery store, walmart, or a middle eastern

store. By the way, shortening and lard both make very nice soaps. My

first soap was made with a can of crisco and some orange essential

oil. This was many years ago before all of these soaping oils became

more available.

[Dave:] Likewise. In fact, I always recommend to beginners that they make a

batch or two of a real simple soap with shortening or maybe cooking oil,

just to get the feel of the process without spending a lot of money. Some

folks try it and get hooked, like me. Others decide it’s really not for

them. Either way, you get a batch of surprisingly nice soap, and it doesn’t

cost a bunch. It’s really nice to have that behind you before you sit down

and start buying exotic oils.
