Guest guest
Have her make a tea of anise seed and steam her head with it. It's a decongestant. Heck so is steam. For myself I'd use Anise, peppermint, and a bit of cayenne pepper in the homemade chicken soup I made... Cayenne/anyone of the peppers can get things to loosen up a bit. Guest guest
Marcia, thank you! I have fwd'd the info you gave to my brother, since he's the one taking care of everyone while they're sick. I know they've had my 11-month-old nephew into the dr three times in the last week (high fever) but I'm not sure if my SIL has been seen. I will find out if she's been checked for middle ear infection. It's a nasty flu that got hold of them...right after they took little Mattias to daycare for the first time, wouldn't you know. jaime,CA

I especially worry about those that hang on and on in your respiratory tract; we are constantly steaming and making chest wraps in the winter months. Like Butch, we use oregano (infused in honey) (and hopefully at the onset before the nasties can take up long-term residence) - I like to take it subliminally under the tongue where it gets into the bloodstream faster. I suggested chamomile/lavender because they are gentle . . . But, frankly, occasionally the times might call for heavier artillery. The ear is delicate, but adding 1 teeny drop of oregano to a triple batch of the ear oil might not be a bad idea for an adult. And, perhaps a scant bit of tea tree, as well. One of the substitutes for tea tree might be Manuka, which has a good range of antibacterial action, but is more gentle than tea tree. They can infuse their own garlic oil (mash up or press garlic and cover w/olive oil-ratio approx. 1 part garlic to 3 parts oil/let infuse in dark/warm place for 24 hours) . . . Mullein flowers for oil might be difficult to find this time of year. Garlic really is a primary ingredient here. Store garlic oil in fridge; discard after a few weeks; it can mold and I usually make a fresh small batch every time we need it. When the pressure inside the ear is greater than the pressure outside, it can be painful and gives you that plugged ear fealing. A while back my doctor recommended blowing up balloons. Seriously, when you blow hard and hold your nose and mouth you can " pop " your ears. After a bad cold your ears can have a pressure problem for a while, and that is one way to get them back to normal. You might still have the congestion, but it can help relieve the pressure. Joanne With all respect, Joanne, I have never heard of a doctor recommending this treatment. You can damage your eardrums by creating more pressure and there are cases of shattering the eardrum when blowing your nose too hard when there is blockage. The eustacian tube is the connection between sinus passages and the ear; any violent blowing of the nose creates even more pressure on already swollen and irritated areas of the ear. This is not a good idea and I hope that people here don't take your advice. Sinus infections are adversely affected by changing barometric pressure. Anyone who has flown with a head cold and suffered the pain of increased pressure knows what I mean. Ouch. Mucus can get so thick in the sinus area that congestion sometimes has to be surgically removed or drained. But, please don't try to blow to clear your plugged ears!! All doctors I know would recommend swallowing. This is why babies are given bottles or a pacifier on the plane. Guest guest
I didn't see this come up on the list so I'm resending it. It is too important not to respond here.
