The guys and gals who work in stores these days don’t even remember carbon paper, much less washing soda. It’s in the process of disappearing from store shelves all across the country. All is not lost, though. Washing soda is sodium carbonate – give it an extra carbon atom and you have baking soda, sodium bicarbonate. Washing soda is also called soda ash, and you can buy it at a pool supply store. Walmart has it on the shelves in their pool cleaning and supplies, and the brand name is pH Plus. It’s about $6 for a jug that weighs several pounds. -- Version: 7.5.430 / Virus Database: 268.14.19/555 - Release 11/27/2006 6:09 PM -- Version: 7.5.430 / Virus Database: 268.14.19/555 - Release 11/27/2006 6:09 PM
Guest guest
Ty so much David I did find some of the soap bars today at my local grocery store. But I will also be hunting in the pool aisle at walmarts but I am sure the pool supplies are not out on the shelves this time of year but maybe they will surprise me. Carmen [Dave:] I guess it depends where you live. Norman Stark’s Formula Book and FB2 suggest a hardware store or pool supply store. It’s a natural mineral, also made synthetically, not poisonous, should be easily available online. I’d look for soda ash first, and then sodium carbonate. I like to shop at independent, TruValue-type hardware stores. They will usually order something for you, where the big chains won’t. Only thing is, be sure you don’t have to buy a barrel of the stuff. If you do, it shouldn’t run over about $40. -- Version: 7.5.430 / Virus Database: 268.14.19/555 - Release 11/27/2006 6:09 PM -- Version: 7.5.430 / Virus Database: 268.14.19/555 - Release 11/27/2006 6:09 PM
Guest guest
I can't get washing soda here either. So I use soap, baking soda, and borax. Now some very nice people form other lists have sent me some flat rate! So I can finally make the gel laundry soap. The one I have been using (powder) baking soda, soap and borax has worked fine for me. Guest guest
I made the liquid laundry soap recipe the other day using my plain lard soap with washing soda and borax. It is a bit gloopy, not a very smooth consistancy, but my laundry doesn't seem to care. Seems to be working well. I have been using my own powdered laundry soap for about 6 months now, but this liquid formula will be MUCH cheaper. On a side note, I ordered my washing soda (sodium carbonate) from a local chemical company very inexpensively. Juliet in Alaska

It simply costs more than washing soda. The only difference between the two is a carbon atom – that, and the fact that sodium carbonate is not generally milled and refined to as high a level of purity as that of baking soda. But then, it doesn’t need to be. -- Version: 7.5.430 / Virus Database: 268.14.19/555 - Release 11/27/2006 6:09 PM -- Version: 7.5.430 / Virus Database: 268.15.3/562 - Release 12/1/2006 1:12 PM
